Daniel looked at Anna as she spoke about the bean bag chair she dragged over, making a mental note to check on his cat later. "Spoken like a true Hufflepuff" he remarked, rolling his eyes. He was still disappointed that he had been sorted to this House by the sorting hat. In his mind, he belonged in Ravenclaw House.
Her response perplexed him even more than he was expecting. Why was she so certain that he had offered to assist her with...whatever she called it?...' prism a rainbow'. But she continued before he could open his mouth to speak. Daniel frowned at the compliments. They did not feel genuine. "You need to stop calling everyone older than you 'important and big brain'" or whatever words she was using at the time. He'd overheard a few in the previous days. "It's uncomfortable. Furthermore, I have an excellent memory and do not recall ever offering assistance." He had finally grasped what she was on about though.
Daniel reopened his advanced Transfiguration book and flipped through a few pages. He was already bored. Perhaps he was going through a reading slump. He despised them. "There's no need to take out your book" He'd decided to amuse her for a while. "What exactly do you want to know?" Anna pouted. A little. She was a little disappointed but mostly incredibly guilty that she had disrupted the cat's peace. But...it was over now, what happened had happened, and cats rarely came when they were called. They were more the sorts to take a memo and get back to you in some random number of business days. Unless you had food and she did not and it did not seem like Daniel did either.
"You say that like it is a bad thing," she pointed out. She wasn't bothered by his opinion but it was interesting that someone who WAS a Hufflepuffle would act like they had the ICK about it. She had been told she could have been a Gryffindoodle but she had not really pondered over what that meant very much.
"...oh..." Her face fell a little but that was mostly due to embarrassment rather than something else. Embarrassment that she had made him feel uncomfortable but also confused as to why she couldn't be honest about what she thought about people. "Do you not like compliments? Or is it just the compliment of being called smarter and more experienced that makes you uncomfortable? Like...I have my expectations too high?" Which felt like some serious foreshadowing, delayed foreshadowing, since he proved that latter point immediately by saying he had never made an offer but she had read that there had been one. "...oh..." Another 'oh' and just a little more crestfallen as well. This was, again, due to embarrassment for reading the air SO poorly. "...oh...well...I mean...sorry...I thought...well...I'll just...pack up then?" she mumbled while starting to gather her rainbow writing implements. But then he gave her mixed signals and was suggesting that she stay and elaborate.
So...nooooooooooow was she getting an invitation?
"...well..." she replied, her tone turning a complete 180 as she resetting into her beanbag chair and hugged the journal to her chest. "...you hinted at my turning my generosity and rainbows into a business...and I don't know anything about doing that but you sounded really confident and like you knew how to do that...so...yeah! I was curious about you meant."
