CHARLES HOLLINGBERRY
MINISTER FOR MAGIC

look like: Sean Bean // posts in: darkorange

"A wizard is not made by the family he comes from, but the family he protects."
—Charles Hollingberry, inaugural speech as Minister for Magic

Full Name: Charles Edward Hollingberry
Date of Birth: 3 February 2026
Patronus: opossum
Wand: 13 inch delicate poplar with clabbert tooth core
Amorentia: lavender oil
Boggart: outliving his children & grandchildren
Never without: his wallet sized red leather photo album in his coat pocket (Undetectable Extension Charm in place) that holds hundreds of photos of his children & grandchildren
Personality type: ESFJ - A (CONSUL)
Signature:

Likes: Photography. Non Fiction literature. Playing the guitar. Spoiling his grandchildren.
Dislikes: Disorganization. Narrow-mindedness. People who double dip.

Charles Hollingberry is the kind of man who remembers the birthdays of every junior staffer and still gets misty-eyed when talking about his children's first words. Towering at 6'3" (at least before the Third Wizarding War which left him dependent upon a cane to get around and shaving a few inches off his stature) with a warm, steady presence, Charles carries with him the aura of someone who has seen deep sorrow and chosen kindness anyway. A proud Gryffindor, he's equal parts diplomat and doting grandfather, with a red leather photo album always tucked in his coat pocket—enchanted, of course, to hold hundreds of animated photos of the people he lives for.

A registered Metamorphagus who changed his own features to sever ties from a cruel past, Charles is known for his affable leadership style, heartfelt speeches, and no-nonsense approach to international relations. Though naturally charismatic and often the most gregarious person in the room, his jovial demeanor masks a current of grief and guilt that runs quietly beneath. A widower whose late wife rejected the magical world after nearly being killed by it, Charles still grapples with the aftermath—not just her death, but her growing fear of magic, and by extension, their magical children. He never blamed her. Instead, he mourns how fear stole from them the years they should’ve had together as a whole family.

Through it all, Charles remains fiercely devoted to the people he loves. His patronus is an opossum―often depicted as humorous in how he figuratively has played dead in his own life―is much more a reflection of his protective nature, cleverness, and unshakably loyal.

HISTORY IN BRIEF
Born into a rigidly pureblood household in Stratford-upon-Avon, Charles Edward Hollingberry (née [birth name classified]) was expected to follow in the footsteps of his Slytherin ancestors. Instead, the Sorting Hat placed him squarely in Gryffindor—an act that ignited the beginning of his family's disapproval. He grew up surrounded by gold and coldness, but found true warmth in friendships, music, and leadership. As Head Boy, he co-founded The Winged Horsemen, a wrock band where he sang lead vocals and played guitar, uniting misfit souls with magical sound until the group disbanded tragically after an Obliviator accident hospitalized their drummer.

After Hogwarts and university, Charles entered the British Ministry and rose swiftly through the Department of International Magical Cooperation. His diplomatic talent led to an ambassadorial post in Japan—an assignment that would change his life. There, he met Yukie, a brilliant and grounded Muggle woman who became his wife. But their love story was hard-won. When his family discovered their marriage, they retaliated with violent, near-fatal consequences. In a show of both defiance and rebirth, Charles changed his identity, cutting visual and legal ties to his bloodline by permanently altering his face and adopting the surname "Hollingberry."

Their marriage was loving—but complicated. Yukie, deeply traumatized by her brush with magical violence, slowly turned away from the world Charles belonged to. Her fear of magic grew over time, and though she loved her children, she struggled to accept what they were becoming. Charles, heartbroken but empathetic, never condemned her. He supported her from afar when she needed distance, raising their children with care and pride, even as his heart fractured watching the chasm widen between Yukie and their magical family.

Yukie passed in 2077. Charles never remarried—but he found companionship again with Victoria Culloden, and threw himself into both public service and family life. He returned briefly to London to support his daughter Kurumi’s transition to Hogwarts, taking a post at The Daily Prophet before returning to Japan to head the very department where he’d once been a newcomer. His career culminated in his appointment as British Minister for Magic—a role he holds with the gravity of someone who understands both the magic and the messiness of human nature.

NOTEABLE QUOTES
"I know magic can be dangerous. I’ve seen what it can do to people I love. But I’ve also seen what it can heal, what it can build, and how it lets us love bigger than the laws of nature sometimes allow."
—in an address to Hogwarts graduates, 2099
"You can’t force someone to feel safe in a world that hurt them. All you can do is stand at the edge of their fear with open arms and say, ‘Whenever you’re ready, I’m here.’"
—private correspondence, later quoted in A Man of Magic and Memory by Tempest Fowley

"I’ve faced giants in diplomacy, politics, even war. But nothing makes me braver than being a granddad. Those lot are ferocious."
—spoken during a Quibbler interview when asked about the scariest job he’s ever had
"Titles come and go. Minister, Ambassador, even Head Boy. But the first time someone calls you 'Dad'—or better yet, 'Grandpa'—that’s the one that sticks in your heart."
—from a Father’s Day radio interview on the Wizarding Wireless Network

"You don’t have to forgive the past to move forward. Sometimes, you just have to stop letting it hold the map."
—in response to a Hogwarts student’s question during a Q&A on reconciling with family

"If there’s one thing I’ve learned about peace—diplomatic or personal—it’s that it can’t be won. It can only be offered, over and over again, until someone’s ready to take your hand."
—opening speech at the 2083 International Magical Cooperation Summit

"We grow older and taller and grayer, but part of us will always be eleven years old, standing at the edge of something impossible, wondering if we’re allowed to belong."
—from a radio interview on Wand to Know
