Airey is pure velocity in a suit with a perfectly knotted Windsor. An astronomer who treats scientific inquiry like a moral imperative and considers emotional subtlety a secondary language at best. Passionate, precise, and occasionally explosive in enthusiasm, he’s the kind of man who will give an impromptu lecture on stellar nucleosynthesis mid-conversation and be genuinely baffled when someone doesn’t want to hear about the life cycle of a G-type main-sequence star over lunch―or why season 2 episode 9 is the absolute best episode of Star Trek.

He’s clinical, yes, but not cold. There's a fire under the calculations, a kind of structured intensity that burns brightest when he's teaching, discovering, or wildly gesticulating about the latest planetary alignment. Airey doesn’t do "whimsical" per say, but he does vault onto desks with zero warning when the moment calls for it, usually accompanied by frenzied gleam in his eye. Unspeakables have a betting pool for what will send him airborne next. The current favorite: anomalous radio bursts.

His love for astronomy is absolute and sacred—so do not confuse it with astrology unless you enjoy being the subject of an extremely detailed, increasingly agitated monologue on the difference between empirical observation and pseudoscience. He has a deep, almost reverent relationship with data, treating well-sourced information like others treat poetry. Numbers don’t lie. Stars don’t pretend. And Airey, for all his brusque delivery and Vulcan-level logic, finds a strange comfort in that.

A massive Star Trek devotee, Airey is known to describes things in terms of warp theory or Federation protocol...and not at all ironically. He’s emotionally aligned with Spock, professionally aligned with Data, and privately wishes he could live on Deep Space Nine. He’s memorized the entirety of 'The Voyage Home' and thinks 'First Contact' is an underrated masterpiece. He once threatened to revoke someone’s security access to Level 9 for calling him “Bones.”

Despite his occasionally intimidating intellect and emotionally minimalist demeanor, Airey is deeply loyal and has his own brand of fierce protectiveness, especially toward students or colleagues who share his respect for scientific integrity or managed to weasel their way into his endearment zone regardless of it. It would be a tad misguided to describe Airey as a dreamer. Rather, he is a builder of hypotheses, a plotter of orbits, a constant student of the universe’s mechanics. But if you ever catch him at the telescope alone, charting something no one’s ever named yet, you might notice—beneath the rigid methodology and rapid-fire calculations—something close to awe. Not romanticized. Not poetic. Just a quiet acknowledgment that the universe is vast, and he’s lucky enough to understand it and have the opportunity to attempt to unravel more of its mysteries.

Airey always showed remarkable potential at Hogwarts—brilliant, inquisitive, and alarmingly quick on the uptake...but his restless energy and complete inability to sit still for extended periods often got him into trouble. A mind forever moving faster than his environment, he had a tendency to leap before looking… sometimes quite literally. His Hogwarts career nearly ended before it began when he was expelled late in his second year for accidentally setting fire to the tapestries in the Headmaster’s office. It is a mishap he still insists was a misunderstood experiment gone slightly sideways (aka, catastrophic).

Surprisingly, he was allowed to return the following year under strict probation, with the Headmaster mandating his participation in at least two extracurricular clubs as well as the Hogwarts choir. It was meant as a disciplinary measure, a way to channel his chaotic energy into something constructive, but to everyone’s shock (including Airey’s own) he discovered a profound love for music. Singing became a focus point in his otherwise scattered orbit, helping him hone concentration, discipline, and even a kind of emotional regulation he hadn’t known he was capable of.

Though he never entirely shed his reputation as a chronic mischief-maker, Airey slowly earned the respect of both peers and professors. His antics became more (arguably) creative than destructive (like the time he dosed the end-of-term staff feast with Hair Removal Potion, leaving the entire faculty bald for twelve hours). He still argues it was a social experiment in power dynamics and vanity...but to each their own. Behind the pranks and theatrics, though, was a student with a genuine passion for learning and a ferocious intellect. He managed to graduate with solid marks, particularly excelling in Astronomy, Charms, and Muggle Studies... as well as magical acoustics.

In hindsight, Hogwarts may not have changed Airey so much as given him enough starlight and structure to keep him from self-destructing. And in return, he gave the castle more than a few stories to remember.

After graduating from Hogwarts, Airey found himself at a crossroads—not lost, exactly, but standing at the edge of a very large, star-studded horizon wondering what came next. The thrill of outsmarting professors and concocting elaborate pranks had worn thin (well, slightly), and for the first time, he realized that if he wanted to make something of himself beyond schoolyard legend, he’d have to channel his boundless energy into something with a little more gravity.

Deeply inspired by an Astronomy professor who had once taken a chance on him (thank you, Marion Burbage in particular), Airey secured an internship at the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge and enrolled at Wizarding University. There, he found new dimensions to his passions and dove headfirst into laboratory astrophysics by day while performing in musical theatre by night. He never gave up singing―in fact, he doubled down on it. If anything, Airey’s dreams only grew more outrageous: not content with simply reaching for the stars, he set his sights on being the first person to sing show tunes on the moon—or any celestial body, really.

Driven and determined, Airey earned his PhD in laboratory astrophysics and later joined the mission operations directorate of NASA. His career was set to launch until centrifuge training left him with a debilitating spinal injury and a scar that stretched the length of his back. Declared medically unfit for spaceflight and grounded from the astronaut candidate program, he was devastated. The dream that had become his guiding constellation suddenly felt light-years away.

But stars have a way of finding those who keep looking up. When he was unexpectedly appointed Astronomer Royal, Airey found renewed purpose in teaching. The role’s outreach duties brought him back into the classroom and eventually back to Hogwarts, where he served as the school’s Astronomy professor for eleven terms, eight of which he also spent as Gryffindor’s Head of House. He continued his work with NASA’s training division and contributed regularly to the Royal Astronomical Society, all while keeping a steady hand on his wand and an eye on the heavens.

His time at Hogwarts came to a dramatic pause when he was cursed—an incident that resulted in being administered a powerful de-aging potion. The unforeseen side effect? His eligibility for space travel was, quite literally, renewed. Airey resigned from Hogwarts and rejoined the UK Space Agency, determined once more to reach the stars. Despite making the astronaut candidate list for several years, he never made the final selection. It wasn’t until a former student—Sophie Brown—came calling that Airey took a long, hard look at the trajectory of his life. Her visit rekindled his love for exploration in a different form: not of space, but of magic’s deepest mysteries. He transitioned into work at the Department of Mysteries as an Evolutionist, eventually rising to become Department Head.

To this day, Airey still sings. He still stargazes. And yes—he still performs the occasional prank.
