SPOILER!!: Violet's work

Violet sat back and folded her hands after completing the assignment. She was usually good at maths, but she liked it to be put to some practical use. Theoretical number problems bored her.

Finally the class moved on. Inflation! Violet had heard her Grandfather grumble about it, usually in a conversation with her Uncle Hamlet about proposed increases in his allowance, but Violet wasn't really sure what it was. Well--inflate meant to blow up, as in make bigger. So her guess would be... "Is it when prices for things get bigger?"
