Desiree watched the doggy intently, curious to see what he - she? - was going to do. Not that she expected the dog to bite or anything like that, but animals were weird sometimes! She felt a slight pang of jealousy when the cute doggy went to Jude first, but she couldn’t blame him/her. Jude was friendly like that!

Anyway, it wasn’t long before the doggy - Bess, apparently - came to her too. Desiree giggled. Bess sounded like a grandma name, but this little doggy didn’t act much like a grandma! She wondered where that name came from. Maybe this Bess was named after someone’s grandma? More giggles followed as Bess sniffed and nudged her hand. She didn’t need to be forced; she was all too willing to give Bess all the pets she wanted. “Hi, Bess! I’m Desiree, and he’s Jude. Let’s be friends!” she said as if she were a Disney princess talking to her animal sidekick, petting Bess all the while. “Aww, you’re such a cutie patootie!”

Desiree blinked as Jude spoke. What? Oh, right, treats. She gave her partner a vague nod. Aww! Bess's whine sounded so sad! Desiree wasted no time in giving her alllll the pets. "It's okay. He'll be back soon."

And she was right!

Desiree giggled at Bess's barking and jumping. “Are you still hungry, girl?” she said, taking a couple of treats and offering them to Bess when she'd finished the ones Jude gave her.. It was only then that she remembered the professor’s instructions, and her blue eyes darted from the doggy to Jude. “When she’s done eating, shall we try giving her some commands?”

Getting pets from both the humans had Bess in pure doggy heaven. And while she’d been sad when the boy had lefted, the comfort from the girl was more than enough to uplift her spirits, as she leaned into her side, letting her tongue loll out. Mmmm, scratches!

And seemed these two were VERY willing to give her more treats, as the girl offered additional and Bess greedily gobbled them up before doing another lap around the children. Her tummy was quite satisfied, and now she was very eager for them to play with her. Though… she supposed if they DID want to offer more treats and pets she certainly wouldn’t refuse those either.

Commands, hm? Her head tilted at the human, curious as to if that was gibberish or an actual THING in their language.

The scratches had Cedar leaning heavily into the boy's hand, head drooping a little and his back leg starting to thump against the ground. Head scratches were the best. This kid was the BEST.

But... as soon as he thought that the boy was up and moving away from him. And while he didn't understand the command, he understood the tone, his ears flattening a little bit down. Why was the boy going AWAY!? DID HE NOT LIKE HIM ANYMORE?!

Puppy glanced down at the ground, before moving a paw slowly forward on the ground towards the boy, eyes pleading. If he was over there, Cedar wanted to be too. Head scratches!!!

Jordyn continued to stroke his head and back. This was making her long to see her pets at home. Noticing that the puppy had a tag, she saw that he had a name. “Tundra huh? Well Tundra, you are definitely the cutest puppy ever.”. Jordyn thought that this was the perfect time to offer the husky a treat. “Here you go Tundra. I hope you like puppy treats.”

Jordyn was loving this puppy. Could she keep him? Could she….huh?, huh?

CUTEST!? Tundra leaned his head back to howl in agreement, licking the girl’s face once. She was a keeper, recognizing the cute in him. He bet SHE wouldn’t lock him away from her!!! AND she was also offering him treats, which just sold him even more on this girl.

Tundra happily gobbled up the offered snack, before clamoring out of the girl’s lap and playfully crouching in front of her. He was attached, and he was ready to play if she was. If she had more of those treats he might have even been willing to talk, literally in his own way, to convince her to give him more of them.

Crouching down a little more, though not entirely laying down as his brother was and joining the puppy pile (if there were not a lesson then Cooper would have absolutely joined in), he reached out to give their Great Pyrenees a loving scratch (or several) behind the ears and was about to comment on Mercer's naming inconsistencies when he spotted the collar and attached tag nestled beneath all that marshmallow fluff.

"Looks like our new pal's name is Zeus," he cooed, peak baby voice while continuing to ruffle those adorable ears and really get right in there with moving his fingers along the back of the dog's head fluffing all that fur along his neck. "And what a mighty name it is. Yes it is. And you're just as quick as a thunderbolt. Yes you are."

Okay, he was getting a little caught up in the moment and jovial loyalty of their class companion.

"Okay Zeus," Cooper continued while drumming on his thighs a bit. "Come here buddy. Let's see how well you heel." Cooper straightened a bit and pointed to his right side with a whistle. "Come, Zeus."

Not to deny Mercer more face licking and furry cuddles or anything. Surely there could be time after all this for more...because Cooper himself really wanted to jump into a puppy pile.

Zeus was QUITE content, between his new human pillow and all the scratches and words of affirmation from the other. He ceased his kisses for the younger boy, turning his head to give a lick to the older too. He had enough love to give to multiple humans, okay! Could he just never ever move from this spot?

But… scratches were ceasing, and the elder was moving away from him, which caused head to lift as he looked at the boy curiously. He could hear his name, which caused another tilt of his head. But it was a whistle that really got his attention. He reluctantly got off the younger boy, before making slow movements to go over towards the elder.

He didn’t quite understand the command but… there was a hand lowered more on the boy’s right, and maybe that was one that would pet him. So to the right side he would go, coming alongside the human and nudging his hand gently with his head.

Did he do good?

"Fire sign? Oh... yes, I suppose it is," she mused, taking a moment to realize what the younger Ravenclaw meant. She wasn't all that into astrology herself, but she was aware of the different astrological signs. "Do you think his birthday is in August and that's how he got his name?" That was the month for the Leo sign, right? It seemed as plausible a thought as any.

And Leo was back! "Aren't you such a good boy?" she cooed at the puppy as she gave his head and neck attentive pets. Celyn noticed the leap he had to make to get the stick. Of course she would throw it again for him. She had the best time playing fetch the stick with the dogs at her brother's place, so she considered herself quite the expert. Celyn picked up the stick and threw it swiftly across the clearing. "Go get it!"

Oh wait, were they supposed to be doing other things with their dogs? Or did bonding count, because she'd rather just play with him.

GOOD BOY!? WAS HE THE GOOD BOY!? Leo gave a bark in response, lowering himself closer to the ground again and giving butt wags. Because the tail was clearly just not enough to show his enthusiasm for both praise and STICK. He enjoyed the pets, but was waiting for her to grab the stick so he could throw it. A quick lick to her hand petting her, a thank you but also a ‘hurry up’.

And then.. It was in her hand. And he was READY, OKAY. The stick went sailing and he was off again, chasing around after it. He faltered a little when he noticed another dog going after a different stick, the urge to CHASE getting strong, but there was another NEW stick off to the side and that was enough to focus him again. He grabbed it from the ground, turning and RACING back to the pair to drop it in front of them.

New stick. He was still a good boy, right?

—-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

As much fun as he, dogs and students all seemed to be having, Cyril was sure their play time was coming to a close. Glancing at his wrist watch, he could see he was correct. He pushed himself up off the ground, a groan escaping, as the pup pranced off to probably beg someone for treats or play with another unclaimed pup. He dusted off his pants, before giving a loud clap once to get everyone’s attention. “Alright! It’s time to move on to our next activity and put your commands and bonding to the test.” A wave of his wand, and another opening in the fence formed connecting to the unopened shed across the clearing. “It’s time to see how our new friends do with Nogtails.” It was good to know how to clear the demons, both for informational sake and future necessity dependent upon their next careers.

“Now, the other shed does have nogtails within. Before we begin, I’d like to put everyone’s mind at ease. They may be called demons, but they are not looking to harm you. Nor will they be able to cast a curse on the grounds, as we do not have a family sow.” Meaning, they were perfectly safe. “I can assure you, whether these dogs have success in herding or not, breeds that excel in protection were specifically selected for your peace of mind.” At least three of these breeds would not let the humans or other dogs be in harms way. “That being said, herding is the goal. I will be releasing the nogtails into the clearing,” he expanded it ever so slightly so the kids had more space to avoid. “Your task here, is to give the command to your dogs of the day to usher the nogtails back into the shed.” And for anyone concerned if they were harming the nogtails, the answer was no. This was safe, if not frightful, and commonly done with animals of all sorts on farm settings.

“Instinct will primarily take over for the pups, but commands will be needed to keep them on track. Some might stick close to protect your or your partner, others might try to herd the other dogs, or just be disinterested. Think and take note on what motivated your puppy partner to listen to your instructions and utilize that. You’ll have the rest of class to work with your dog and see if you can herd.” He glanced at his watch again, noting that gave them around another 20 minutes. “If anyone has any questions, let me know. Good luck.”

And with that, another wave of his wand and the second shed door opened - allowing the pig like magical creatures to escape and scatter around the clearing.

OOC:

Activity 2 is up! Just as Professor Amstern instructed, the goal is to now putting your students bonding and observations working with the dogs to good use to get them to help herd the nogtails. Have your students give the instructions, and ** I will continue to post as the dogs regarding their success. We will be doing this until class ends on Tuesday, Feb. 15th.

Thanks all for sticking with us so far!
