But...she remembered that they were supposed to be among the most intelligent of dogs, which would definitely be useful. So she walked up to the younger girl and said, "Mind if I join you?"

The dog sat for a moment, looking around the clearing before spotting a girl zoning in on her.
Oh? Was she being called? The poodle blinked a few times at the student, before standing and prancing over towards her. She could see the treat dangled and while she DID want it, and did understand the request… she was going to need love and being told what a good girl she was first. Which as another girl approached and still did not pet her, Lola gave a small bark as if admonishing them, before turning once and giving a half sit - a tease that she COULD listen.
Did they get her message?
No sooner had Delilah dangled the treat in the air, she was joined by a slighter older girl. She glanced away from the poodle and gave the girl a smile.
"Yeah, of course. Violet, right?" she asked. She'd heard the name mentioned in some of the classes, but they'd never formally met.
"I'm Delilah." Just in case she
hadn't heard the name mentioned anywhere. Thank Merlin someone had come along to partner up with her. As a first year and someone who still didn't have a ton of friends, the whole partnering-up thing in classes was still a little nerve-racking.
She turned her attention back to the poodle, who was really starting to put on a show.
"Oh, look how cute she is!" Delilah exclaimed. She squinted at the dog's tags. There was nothing wrong with Delilah's eyesight, but the puppy was turning and halfway sitting.
"Can you read what her collar says?" she asked Violet. Delilah sighed and lowered the treat.
"I don't think she's going to actually sit. Maybe we need to start petting her or something..." Delilah bent her legs at the knees and clapped her hands against her thighs.
"Come here, girl!" She reached out a hand as if to silently ask for permission to pet her (you know, without getting bit or snapped at).
