It was a sentiment Atlas knew well and dwelled on often whenever he thought about what it was like during the war and not being understood and especially so in the aftermath of it all. But...that was not a conversation he was going to start now. "It's not my favorite...but I liked it well enough. It's not really my thing anymore though."
Eyes settling back on his almost completely deconstructed keyboard, the Gryffindor removed a few more keys with relative easy since he had already loosened the other bips and bobs. "Cars?" He had not been paying full attention while trying to get his driver into the right little slot. "What? No. No Cars. Quantum mechanics...the...uh..." His eyes darted to the teddy bear for a moment. "...the study of of the universe works...on a really really really really really really really REALLY really really small scale." He had the impression that this kid did not know what an atom was. "It's science."
Atlas did not mind answering questions, especially about things he knew a lot about, because it made him feel important. "Oh, this? Just some junk I've found laying around the school that I am taking apart for their parts." "Oh...." Aiden said. It made him a little sad that the other boy didn't like the book anymore, but Aiden didn't really know why. It was ok, though, because the whatever-it-was in the other boy's lap had distracted him fully.
"Ohhhhh science," Aiden said, nodding with understanding. He knew about THAT. Not a lot but he knew what it WAS. He had learned about all the types of animals and he'd learned about outer space and well, lots of other things but not anything called 'quantuh mechanics'. But it was about really really really really really really really REALLY small things in the universe, and probably that meant even smaller than a blade of grass. That was really really small but not really really really really really really REALLY small. It probably meant smaller than even an ant, and though the first-year had no idea what an atom was, somehow what the older boy had said had made sense to him.
The boy wasn't USING the machine thingy though, he was just taking it APART. Wasn't that like breaking it on purpose? "What do you need parts for?" Aiden asked, staring up at the other boy in some fascination, with a look that said that the young boy had fully found a new focus besides his book. Just about everybody at school had been fascinating Aiden. He'd never met so many people before, and yeah some of them were scary, but some were nice and some like this boy knew about really interesting things. Nobody had ever taught Aiden that some people didn't like to be peppered with questions. His mother had had endless patience. Really Aiden didn't know anything about talking to people at all. |
