Violet had relaxed when the storm had seemed to pass and was enjoying watching and listening to the rain, an activity she loved. She was caught off-guard when the second crack of thunder shattered the silence, causing her to nearly jump out of her seat and cry out briefly. (Oh dear, did she do that out loud? Violet was utterly mortified and looked at her lap, trying to pretend that nothing had happened.)
