As the hour drew closer, Malachi began to hear the sound of several sets of footsteps making their way down the corridor and toward the classroom. Wasn't all that hard with the door being opened--something that was left that way for good reason, of course. All the better to see the darling students as they began making their arrivals.

"Whoah....headmaster," she seemed AMAZED. "This is so COOL. What kind of magic is this!?" she asked curiously, pulling her strawberry-blonde hair up into a slick pony-tail.

Her tiredness was quickly forgotten!

"Illusion charms, mostly. Stacked to get just the right amount of depth we need for a forest like this." Malachi replied, admittedly quite pleased with himself after the Slytherin's reaction. "Expansion charms too, just to ensure we don't have anyone end up running into a wall during their esc--the lesson."

Very eventful lesson in the making. Mhm.

Did I actually take a nap... oh, no. This is real.

"Hello Headmaster." Darius said. He would've said morning but uh... there was a moon there. What was going to be unfolding today, his eyes tried to survey the area.

"Morning, Potter. I suspect you'll be looking more awake in a little." While the boy wasn't falling over on his feet, the Headmaster could tell he wasn't exactly ready and rearing to go either.

The content of the lesson would take care of that on its own...

"Good morning...." Er.... The man squinted in the dim light of the forest, taking an extra minute to realise he didn't actually know this one. A First Year, yes. He remembered. She was one of many during what had turned into a long feast.

He'd learn her name soon enough. For now, there was no need to stress about it.

And pausing for an entire different reason. This... wasn't his class. Had he touched some sort of portkey to send them to the Forest? Did that even work on Hogwarts grounds?

He blinked for a minute, before remembering his manners and how big on those Professor Trent was. "Good eve-... er, morning, Professor." It looked dark, but was definitely still morning.

He thought.

Stepping further in, Evan went and found a spot near V, one of the few people he currently recognized in the class. He gave her a quick nod of acknowledgement, before getting comfortable in order to wait for the rest to arrive and them to begin.

It may have been hard to see by moonlight but the smallest of amused smirks appeared when the boy almost greeted him with the wrong time of day. Not missing a beat, Malachi nodded. "Good morning, Nam." He suspected the sudden change would catch more than a few of them off guard and he was honestly here for it--may as well enjoy what he could of the lesson before it inevitably went south.

Either way, she’d figured she’d be fine on that aspect of things. No lectures over falling asleep and not being constantly vigilant on her part.

Plus, just in case, she had wrestled her hair into a French braid on the walk from the Great Hall to the DADA classroom. Only to have lowered her hands slowly at the abrupt change from the early morning light in the corridor to night in the forest. “Hello, Headmaster Trent,” she said in greeting, giving him a smile as she was joining him and the other students who had gathered nearby. Hopefully some of her friends would arrive soon.

"Morning, Abbott-Daniau. Looking alert, I like it." An easy observation when you compared the Hufflepuff to nearly everyone else who'd entered the class turned forest. It was good. This being her final year, the Headmaster expected much--as he always did of his seventh years. They were in the final phase, the last push before the real world and he needed to know they were ready.

She nodded at the headmaster politely. She didn’t give him a look of contempt or anything, but she didn’t look happy to see him either. It was just... polite. That was it. She neglected to greet him verbally, because he’d just call her “Fox” and there was no point in showing him extra respect if he wasn’t going to show her any. No point whatsoever. Whatever.

A nod.

It was a nod.

Malachi nodded back, intentionally sparing no more than a glance at the Ravenclaw before looking to the student arriving behind her. If she wouldn't extend him the courtesy of a proper greeting, he wouldn't waste further time there.

"Hello, headmaster." She joined the small group of classmates who were standing nearby, quiet. Val could tell that it was going to be a challenging lesson.

"Good morning, Nichols." The Headmaster returned. She was another he could see taken aback by the sudden change in setting. Always good to keep the students on their toes. They needed to be able to expect the unexpected. It would serve them well not only in this class but in life.

It mattered even less once they reached their first lesson, slipping silently into the subtle darkness of the room. They melted into the trees at what they judged would be the very perimeter of the group, without so much as a pause or break in stride, without acknowledging the Headsman or attempting to draw his attention. For just a moment Nem glanced up, and noted the moon, before turning away from the group and the moonlight. They stared through the trees instead, tuning out the nearby voices of students.

Malachi took one look at the Slytherin then down at his watch to check what time was left before looking back to the Slytherin. "Get out." His words were simple, not rushed but quite certain in their tone. "You don't show up to my class looking the way you do. It's unacceptable. You will get properly attired then you will return." But he would leave. Upstead was on a steady trend, a worsening trend. The reins needed tightening.

Upon entering the classroom, the second year was slightly surprised at the change of scenery and although he had never been in the forbidden forest he knew it had to resemble it. He flicked his wrist and his wand fell in his hand he was proud of himself he didn't drop it this time!!! just in case and stepped forward as he held it by his side, hidden under the long sleeve of his Hufflepuff robe.

"Hello, Headmaster" he greeted as he stood next to Gellar (UGH) before looking up at the full moon that was in the 'sky'. "Are we learning about werewolves today?"

"Good morning, Yoon." The Headmaster returned, sparing a glance up at the moon. He could see where the idea might come from and was glad the boy was already thinking on his feet, but the man shook his head all the same. "Not today, no. We'll be covering werewolves later on in the term." He already knew the essay he would be giving on it. Careful planning, that's what it was.

Ridiculous.

"Uh - are you collectively squashing all our curiosities about the forbidden forest today, headmaster?" since, you know, he wouldn't let them go in there on any other day.

"Nothing of the sort, Flamsteed. " Malachi replied, almost amused by the idea. Mostly. "This has nothing to do with crushing but rather educating on a topic found in your syllabus." If he wanted to go crushing creativity, there were likely more interesting ways to get it done.

Don't go in the forest because you'll get eaten or wish you were eaten (that later statement well...anyway), but now the first lesson of term was plopping them right into an elaborate illusion of the Forbidden Forest...at night.

Scare tactics? Those did tend to work on Atlas so...

On the other hand...he still really...REALLY wanted to meet some of the centaurs that dwelled in the Forest so...

It was a toss up as to whatever result today's demonstration of 'how little was Atlas Flamsteed able to defend himself'. Sometimes he just felt like Defense Against the Dark Arts class was entering a perpetual no win situation state. Chances were, since he knew he would not really do well, it would not hinder this little ambition all that much. Don't ask where the logic was there. It had been checked at the door when his eyes had needed several seconds to adjust to the lighting.

His eyes were still adjusting, by the way, so he totally missed Nemesis over in the trees, and he squinted a bit at his Head of House - also known as the discourager of inter-house friendships. Or perhaps paying into old stereotypes that Gryffindors and Slytherins were supposed to be enemies - which made his appointment of Auntie June CONFUSED.

Too much thinking for right now, so down his eyes went to his feet as they rocked back and forth on the conjured grass. Even with the full moon, however, he was sort of having a hard time seeing. "Lumos," he whispered, pulling out his wand and holding the dim light near his face. "...probably won't squash mine," he replied to his brother with a standard dash of brute honesty. "Haven't met a centaur yet. Can we do a joint lesson of sorts with them sometime, headmaster?"

Uh, probably should have started this with a 'good morning'. Oh well.

"Again, this lesson has nothing to do with squashing anyone's anything." Well, not in those terms, not like that. That his students thought he would waste an entire lesson on trying to get children to obey him was...it was...he could facepalm but he wouldn't.

"I won't make any promises for this term. Your professors and myself have already gotten our lessons organised and noted the topics we'll cover. What I will say is, it can be a possibility at some point."

From the Great Hall, she had made her trek to the DADA classroom. Upon entering, she was slightly taken aback. Hadn't the Headmaster just mentioned at the feast that no one was allowed into the Forbidden Forest? Was the doorway some sort of magical portal? Maya was tempted to walk back out and investigate further but resisted the urge since Headmaster Trent was standing right by the door.

"Good morning, Headmaster," she greeted.

Her brown eyes took a quick look around the room... well... the forest spotting her brother, Evan. Maya joined him and gave her elder brother a smile. "Morning Ev, hope you had breakfast... looks like class will be interesting."

"Good morning, Nam." One of the students he didn't typically have to worry about falling asleep this early in the morning. Not everyone was an early riser. Even though he was still at a school for magic, the kid couldn't just let his athleticism slip away. That would be a waste of what's he been doing all his life basically. Kayne's love for sports had transpired even before his love for magic. Well, all but one sport, that is. Quidditch, which is rather ironic. Mordrake absolutely despised it, solely due to the fact that he wasn't good at flying. And he saw no point in liking a sport that he wasn't good at. Conceited? Maybe. Fear of not doing well at something? Definitely.

As for his outfit today, the fifth year was sporting one of his signature 90s inspired looks, but this time with a little bit of a 70s twist. His shirt was a fitted, white tank top with the sides cut and embellished with shoelaces, giving it the effect as if the shirt was laced together up to his arm. Overtop of that, Kayne had some tie dye overalls on which flared out into bell bottoms; the yellow, pink, and blue seemingly mixing together in a wondrous blend of pastels, with a hint of neon. Obviously, the look wouldn't be complete without some matching nails, which is precisely what he also utilized. The nails were short, but painted to match the tie dye of the overalls.

Walking into the classroom, the first thing Kayne took note of was...it not being the classroom at all? It was a lovely view of the forest, it just took threw him in for a loop for a second there. After that initial shock though, the Slytherin had just stood there and basked in the scene for a second. He had always loved the look of the Forbidden Forest, even though it did look rather creepy at times.

Eyes now redirecting themselves away from the view and over to the Headmaster, Kayne couldn't help but think of what he should do as a greeting. It was the first day of classes, a boring 'good morning', just simply wouldn't cut it. Quickly coming up with something, so that way he wasn't just awkwardly standing there staring, Mordrake decided to stick with the overall (pun intended) theme of the 90s. In his best Mrs. Doubtfire voice, he let out a big "Heellooooo Headmaster Trent." Starting to now walk more into the classroom, he continued on saying (still with the Mrs. Doubtfire impression) "I hope you're doing well today." With that being said, Kayne couldn't help but laugh at himself a bit. There was certainly no wrong time for his tomfoolery.

Making his way over to his favorite Ravenclaw, Ash, he tapped her on the shoulder. "Hey stranger! How've you been?" Kayne asked, his voice lined with delight. Finally, the Lord of Divination had been reunited with the Queen of the Swamp. To him, it had felt like ages since the two have last seen each other, but in reality, it was only about 3 months. But still, that didn't take away from how enthuses he was to see Ash again.

....

.....

Malachi stared, and stared then stared some more at the blatant disregard for school rules so early into the term. "You, too. Get out." Honestly, what was with the Slytherins this term? June had her work cut out for her. "Return to your common room and get changed into proper school uniform then return. Don't take too long." Why the boy thought it appropriate to show up in whatever he liked was beyond him but this was school and it was time to get back into it.

He moved along the crowd of the standing students. Nodding or waving toward a few of them. Darius and Ash mostly were the ones he had seen right away in the strange moonlight. He wondered what would be in store for this lesson, as he stared out into the trees.

"Good morning, Culloden." At least the boy wasn't falling over or slumping. In a while more, he suspected that all who'd had a problem with the morning would find themselves more awake and alert. For now, he would leave them to it and wait to begin.

Last year it turned out to be one of those classes she was just average in, and that was not good enough!

Remy’s first reaction to the Forbidden Forest look going on inside the classroom was amazement. She’d never been so close to what seemed to be that forest before, and the illusion was a very impressive one at that. It looked like the doorway was literally leading to the outdoors. Magic was so cool.

Standing by the obvious choice, the Flamsteed twins, Remy moved her face close to Atlas’ (not cheek touching, don’t worry) to get a good view of his wand-lighting charm. “Nice. That makes the forest look so much cooler.” She complimented his wand work, naturally. Also, hi.

Good morning, Headmaster Trent.

She could already tell that this class was going to be EPIC.

"Good morning, Gaeltheos. Perhaps you could give some of your classmates lessons on how to attend the first class of the term." If everyone walked in looking so ready and rearing to go, he suspected they could all have a better time of it. One less student to get pumped at the very least.

As she neared the door she noticed it was not the usual classroom, but yet the forbidden forest. Was this a test? Was she not supposed to enter the classroom since it was, well, forbidden after all? She stepped up to the professor in the doorway, ”Good Morning, Professor.” She kept it simple and sweet whilst she peered over his shoulder to see some of her classmates in the… erm…classroom(?) already. So she pushed past Professor Trent and made her way to the group of people she recognized.

V, Evan, and his sister Maya all stood in a small group just inside the forest/classroom thing. “Hello guys” she greeted excited to see her friends after what seemed like a summer that lasted forever.

Malachi watched the Slytherin come to a stop by him, uncertain at first what might have caused the hesitation. The lesson hadn't begun yet, there wasn't anything to worry her....yet.

"Morning, Burke." The man replied when the young girl seemed to finally be over whatever had kept her there a moment ago. Certainly was a mixture of reactions to the morning's setup.

The nightmarish reality from her second year where she and Bernadetter were almost killed by acromantulas flashed vividly before her. She saw Trent and Fuller-Thompson, the latter’s sweet dogs being eaten… all because of her. Claudine squeezed her eyes shut, took deep breaths to calm herself.

When she opened her eyes, she was only calmed slightly but she tried to pass it off as if this entire Forest setting didn’t bother her. Professor,’’ Claudine greeted, having finally caught sight of him standing right there. One thing she was certain of, the man would recall all the details of that misadventure five years ago. Suddenly, she felt the need to apologise for it. Had she done so back then? She couldn’t remember. Whatever. “Sorry about what happened during my second year,’’ Claudine mumbled before going to stand next to Darius where the rustling sounds were ignored. At least she tried to ignore them.

Malachi had almost missed the muttered words of the Slytherin. He found he had to concentrate a little more when the audible "professor" turned somewhat less so as she went on. When he did hear, however, he was taken aback. Quite suddenly the Headmaster could remember that fateful day he'd been doing a good job of forgetting.

Given the topic of the day's lesson, it grew all the more real.

"The important thing is that you've learned from it." He returned, not unkindly. The Slytherin had done a fair bit of growing in that time. He didn't expect the same silly stunts she would have carried out back in her second year and it was honestly a relief.

Really it was all about timing. That's how she was wide awake and perfectly on time as she reached the DADA room with a bounce in her step. Stepping through the doorway there was an immediate difference from the bright corridor she had just been in, to the now darkened evening sky in that of the Forbidden Forest.

Bright blue eyes swung from dark shadowy clumps of trees and surrounding students to the doorway behind her. After what was said during the feast the night before was this meant to be some sort of scare tactic? Cause if so, it was already somewhat unsettling. This was definitely not like the forests where she went camping with her family or Tadhg's during the summer. Speaking of Tadhg.. it only took a moment for her to spot him and make her way towards him.

"Good day, Headmaster," Dahlia greeted softly. Standing side-by-side with Tadhg, her arm brushing up against his, she intertwined her pinkie around his giving it a gentle squeeze. Her free hand now holding her wand.. just in case. One could never be to prepared.

"Good morning, Donovan." Another that he had no difficulty with when it came to early morning lessons. "Good morning, Headmaster Trent," she remarked with just the proper degree of politeness and respect and headed further into the room, only to be a little taken aback by finding herself in the Forbidden Forest. She hadn't been there since her second year, and things hadn't gone well, so she'd avoided it ever since.

Violet came up behind Ashley just in time to her her murmured comment. "Yeah, you and me and a few other people, too," Violet replied without thinking, then hoped she hadn't upset the younger girl. Looking around, Violet felt a creeping chill up her back. Night, Forbidden Forest, full moon--Violet was beginning to suspect what this class might be about, and she didn't like it.

She did not want to feel underprepared ever again. Finally stepping through the door she stopped dead in her tracks, "Bloody Merlin. Absolutely not. I refuse this is nonsense and I cannot believe we're doing this." Her mumbling surely would not be noticed.

Trying to even out her heart rate at the sight of the FORBIDDEN FREAKING FORREST of all things. Taking an actual step through the door she glanced at Trent. Ugh she had this. "Hello Professor" the polite tone did nothing to make her feel like the would go well. She wasn't sure where to stand, well take that back she knew she would not be caught dead standing near Nem that would be bad. Instead she moved closer to one Gracelyn Abbott-Daniau because it was a familiar face.

Malachi didn't most of the Gryffindor's muttered words, having been preoccupied with another student that entered. All he heard was the greeting and that was perhaps for the best. "Good morning, Rivers." Was it just him, or did she look like she would rather be anywhere else?

Good Morning Headmaster!” she spoke sang with a smile before remembering what Nemesis Upstead has encouraged her to do. And of course, curiosity was Lisa’s Achille heel. “I… have a uh question to ask you at some point… it has to do with a lesson with kelpies… one of the older students recommended me to ask you about it but I can ask you at another point in time, sir.

After pausing for a few moments, she waved to her siblings and friends before joining Remy who stood near the Flamsteed twins. “Hi,” she greeted them, sidling up to Remy. She then glanced around the forest. V and Daniel standing next to each other did not go unnoticed by her. How peculiar…

Uh....

"Sure...." The lesson on the kelpies? He taught kelpies just about every term, with mixed results. Though if someone told her to ask about it, there could really only be ONE lesson the girl was referring to and it still make him quite....miffed when he thought about. A dark time, truly. Never to be repeated.

"Why don't you stop by my office sometime this week and we'll talk about it then?"

As he surveyed his surroundings, he couldn’t help but notice how eerily like the Forbidden Forest the room looked, and memories came rushing back of that lesson in his fourth year with the fake headmaster… acromantulas closing in, everyone arguing about what to do… He shook his head to distract himself from his thoughts. That won’t happen again, he reminded himself.

Despite the memories, he couldn’t help but be a little intrigued by the scenery. He wondered what spells Headmaster Trent had used to produce it. He had a few ideas… Maybe he’d ask him about it later. For now, he settled for a polite nod in greeting. “Good morning, Headmaster,” he said.

He stood next to Claudine and Darius, nodding in greeting to each in turn. “Hi,” he said. As he looked at Claudine, he sensed that she, too, was thinking about the Forest, and he knew the memories had to be even worse for her. He gave her a small reassuring smile as if to say, It’ll be okay. Of course it would. He trusted Headmaster Trent not to throw them into anything too dangerous, and whatever happened, he’d be there to protect her if necessary.

"Good morning, Jones." One of his more promising students. This being his final year, Malachi was expecting many impressive things from this one, or at the very least the level of competence that would not leave him worrying like some of the boy's year mates did. Either worked.

Phoebe slipped around some of the other students so she could see the Headmaster. No Kizzy or Cece yet, although the usual suspects were in place. "Good... evening, I guess, Professor. Are werewolves susceptible to charmed moons, or are we safe?"

"Good....evening," Sure. "James." Morning, evening, he supposed it made no difference when you had magic on your side. "I assure you, you've got nothing to worry about from werewolves this lesson, magicked moon or not." That worry, at least, she could put to rest.

It was the other kind of nightmare, today.

Kinsay James didn't trust him. She didn't care that he was Kale's dad or that he was a Hogwarts' favorite. Because. Because she couldn't separate him Rosier. It didn't make sense in her head, she knew he wasn't. She knew Rosier used polyjuice and that Kale's dad was trapped in a mirror and that it wasn't him but.

But. She couldn't do it. Everytime she tried to think about it, she hit a wall. It didn't make sense.

So she slipped into the classroom, only greeting him with a meek (and borderline terrified) glance before hurrying inside wordlessly. Um.... Outside? It took all of three seconds for Kiz to recognize where they were and it was Bad. The last time they had gone to the forbidden forest was also for a DADA lesson with Headmaster Trent. Except. That time he abandoned them and they almost died. (And only after he had called her incessant, no less.)

Which only put the Kizzy brain on high alert and meant she was going straight for her sister. Sidling up beside the Pheebs, Kiz took her sister's hand and squeezed tight. "Phoebe, I don't want to be here," she whispered frantically. She really, really didn't.

And then there was this one.

Always a stab of guilt when Kinsay James entered his class--usually dissolving into unadulterated appall at the shear lack of brains she and a certain other Gryffindor shared--but always guilt at the start. Hard to miss, as incessant as she'd been accused of being. If he'd known the one word would follow him all the way into yet another year, he'd have opted against speaking when he'd first met her.

Malachi caught the look and chose to leave her be for now.

Was that the last of them?

Right.

It was time to begin.

Malachi turned to face the students, his wand flicking to slam the door shut with its usual loud thud. Late comers beyond this point would be in for their own bit of unpleasantness but he had a lesson to begin [s]and end[/i]. As it so happened, it was also now 8 am.

"Good morning, everyone. Welcome to the first Defense Against the Dark Arts class of the term. I am Headmaster Trent. For the purposes of my lessons, I'm amenable to 'professor'. For those of you who've never had one of these before, I'm sure you'll soon see how...hands on we tend to get when we enter the classroom." The classroom alone should've been their biggest hint given it wasn't a classroom at all. Indeed, once the door was closed it disappeared entirely. There was nothing but forest in all directions, more or less. Those who had been sent out would be able to knock to regain entrance once he let them back in.

"Some of you have already started making guesses as to what we'll be handling in this class. Before we get into that, I'd like you to humour me for a moment. Picture this, you've been brought to this forest--or any other--for a planned excursion. Being the strategists I've been praying you'd become, gimme the first danger that would cross your mind and how you would prepare to handle it. Doesn't have to be magical or even a creature. Go."

OOC: First question is up, once again you'll have anywhere from 24 - 28 hrs to get it done. If you're only now posting, just pretend you've been here all along...unless you wanna incur the wrath of Malachi Trent of course (:<
