Suffocated by refusal

“Let me in! Let me in!”

Her calls were met by the sound of silence, but she was both eager and relentless.

Once more she tried, this time with more urgency. “Let me in! I have to show you something!”

She pressed her ear against the door, listening for the sounds of his pen scratching against paper.

And again, she knocked. Her bright eyes conveying nothing but childlike enthusiasm. “Let me in! It’s me! It’s Nina!”

This time her hand reached for the doorknob desperately. It was a game. They were playing a game.

“It’s important, please, let me in!”
