Phoebe reached out a foot and propped it next to Nem's, just to show them they couldn't take up all that space without some sort of consequence. It made her so steaming MAD to be gaslit by a creep, treated like Nem hadn't spent last term doing As Much As Possible. Like she was being unreasonable.
"Don't be a jerk, Nemesis. You don't get to sit on my train, traveling to MY castle, and act like I'm the bad guy for being here. Promise me a real conversation about what went down last term, and I'll leave you in peace for the rest of this train ride." But not forever. There was definitely a reckoning to be had. Quote:

And I got away with way too much stuff when he was in charge, even though I was like his least favorite student. And he was way too arrogant. And his whole idea collapsed when he died, and that's not how ideas are supposed to work. I'll tell you if I think of anything else to say." It wasn't screaming, but it was fun to say without getting in trouble. She looked at Phoebe. She wanted to rest her head on her shoulder, but she didn't because she Was Fine and Didn't Need Help. She shook her head. "Nah. You don't want to hear it. Plus, I'd get self conscious if I screamed bad things at someone who cared." It was better to scream to a brick wall that wouldn't listen or respond. She looked at Phoebe talking to Nem with interest. Could she watch this 'conversation'? Please? "Thanks Upstead. Don't worry, I won't enjoy it." The small talk, that is.
Ash didn't really enjoy anything these days. Truly enjoy them. She talked to people happily and when they left, she felt even emptier than she had before. Thanks, Upstead. This kid did not know Nem very well, if she'd thought they were 1. even remotely easy to anger, and 2. likely to kill her, especially in front of a witness and with no reason to do so. But Nem didn't hold it against her; most kids around here had informed the wrong impression of them over the years, and there had been little use in correcting any of them. Even after Nem had largely dropped the facade - put up out of necessity until the moment the ennui became truly intolerable - most of them still managed to get it wrong.
But Fox wasn't saying anything that Nem did not already know, hadn't already thought. Apart from the bit about the hair (hardly up there on the list of priorities) and about his idea dying with him (it wasn't his idea, but Grindelwald's, showing that anyone could pick up an old dead guy's principles at any point, and run with them), she was more or less right on the money, though Nem would also argue that Lucien Rosier had not been a general idiot, had been more than capable in plenty of other ways. Still. People would always form the narrative that made them feel better, especially children. "Right on, Fox," Nem replied dully, still by all appearances ready to go to sleep and leave them both to it. "You know where to find me." Maybe she didn't, once they were off the train, but no doubt their paths would continue to cross.
Nem let out a sigh, continued to speak without yet looking up. "I haven't acted like you're the bad guy, James. I'm not bothering anyone; you both joined me in here. I've not asked you to leave. I've not asked you to stop talking. I'm leaving you alone. It isn't a crime to not care." This situation would not be the only one of its kind all year, but that was a non-issue. Nem could take what people threw at them, and didn't owe anyone a reaction to fuel their little conflicts. That was all anyone wanted with them, and while on an intellectual level it made some kind of sense, none of them had earned it.
Except James had already ever-so-slightly destabilised that line of thought. Nem paused, drummed their fingers once on their upper arm. "Okay, I promise." They raised their head, ever so slightly, just enough to open one eye and peer over at Phoebe James. "A real conversation, you and me. All you had to do was ask."
Both eyes closed again, Nem leaned their head back against the seat, but not before nudging their foot casually against James', as it was there. Acknowledging her consequences. "That's all anyone ever had to do." They left it at that.
