The vestiges of Nem's interest in reading had by now vanished entirely, out the compartment door and off the back of the train along with any interest they might have had in this conversation. They flipped all the pages once, snapped the book shut, and folded their arms over their chest. Still leaning their head against the seat backs, they stared dispassionately at the compartment wall that backed onto the train corridor. The whole time they spoke, they kept their eyes fixed ahead.

"I'm getting all the life lessons today." Bernadette was somewhere on this train, maybe Nem would go and find her. Probably scare off anyone else who happened to be sitting with her, or earn a slap or punch, depending on who it was, but what was the point in having an unsavoury reputation if you couldn't have a little fun with it. Except they didn't have a whole lot of interest in seeking her out at the moment either. Maybe she'd happen by on her own. "For the record, Fox, you couldn't ruin my day. Not even by coming in here and trying to talk to me about Lucien Rosier."

A broken body, a toppling pillar. The Big Man deserved what he got, though deserving had always been a funny concept. Ultimately, weakness begot failure, and the entire situation only cemented in Nem's mind what they'd already known for years: there was only one person in the world who they could rely on. They didn't (couldn't) grieve for Lucien Rosier, who had ultimately been a stepping stone that Nem had not trusted to hold their weight for even as long as it took to decide on their next move, but they did miss him. Perhaps more accurately, they missed being seen, accepted as the person they were, even if Rosier just fell short of truly understanding them. They didn't anticipate that anyone else would ever get any closer, but it was better this way. Good that it ended when it did. Greater than good.

"Anyway." Nem closed their eyes, huddled up against the seat backs, and to all intents and purposes appeared to be settling in to sleep the rest of the journey away. "Enjoy your small talk."

Phoebe was determined NOT to care too much this term, because caring got people killed, but she also knew what it felt like to feel ignored. To feel helpless and small. So she could care enough to let Ashley Fox scream at her about how the world was unfair. That seemed like something she could do.

Phoebe reached out a foot and propped it next to Nem's, just to show them they couldn't take up all that space without some sort of consequence. It made her so steaming MAD to be gaslit by a creep, treated like Nem hadn't spent last term doing As Much As Possible. Like she was being unreasonable.

"Don't be a jerk, Nemesis. You don't get to sit on my train, traveling to MY castle, and act like I'm the bad guy for being here. Promise me a real conversation about what went down last term, and I'll leave you in peace for the rest of this train ride." But not forever. There was definitely a reckoning to be had.

"Great. So I can talk about Rosier however I want, since you wouldn't get mad and kill me. He's my favorite thing to scream about." Up there with authority, Nemesis Upstead, Emmerson, and The Universe. "He was dumb to not kill us all when he had the chance, and he was an idiot in general. And his hair was dumb too. And I got away with way too much stuff when he was in charge, even though I was like his least favorite student. And he was way too arrogant. And his whole idea collapsed when he died, and that's not how ideas are supposed to work. I'll tell you if I think of anything else to say." It wasn't screaming, but it was fun to say without getting in trouble. She looked at Phoebe. She wanted to rest her head on her shoulder, but she didn't because she Was Fine and Didn't Need Help. She shook her head. "Nah. You don't want to hear it. Plus, I'd get self conscious if I screamed bad things at someone who cared." It was better to scream to a brick wall that wouldn't listen or respond. She looked at Phoebe talking to Nem with interest. Could she watch this 'conversation'? Please? "Thanks Upstead. Don't worry, I won't enjoy it." The small talk, that is.

Ash didn't really enjoy anything these days. Truly enjoy them. She talked to people happily and when they left, she felt even emptier than she had before. Thanks, Upstead.
