"As it happens, I've nearly drown many times, and nearly burned to death almost as often. You must not be paying attention if you don't notice how good I am at getting into messes."
Phoebe crossed her legs and smoothed the frayed edge of her shorts over her knee. They'd have to change into uniforms soon enough, and she wondered vaguely if the uniform would bring back that cold, prickly dread like seeing Nem had. Would the castle make her stomach heave? She was fine, right? Everything was fine. "But Nem is so right. Treason isn't my bag."
But that was a little too pointed, Fox. "Just say what you have to say, Fox. Honestly. Nem knew what they were getting into by coming back. If they want to sit at the table, they'll have to hear from people like you. Stop beating around the ominous bushes." Phoebe was fine ignoring Nem for the moment, because she wasn't exactly taking her own advice. Quote:

Since nobody else wants to. As usual. And the spot will always be free, because nobody will ever want to." She crossed her legs like a small child. What was it with her and her movement these days? It was a little artless. Like she was not moving for any reason but the sake of it. If she didn't move, she might freeze to death or get petrified or something. "I don't have anything to say Phoebe. Nobody wants to have their day ruined by seeing some stupid kid screaming at the top of their lungs about how terrible the world is and how humanity was almost a failure. Ignorance is bliss." She pulled out a marker and started drawing flower designs on her left arm, which took a little bit of effort because she was left-handed. "Would anyone be interested in some small talk? I could tell you about how great I'm doing these days. The secret of being good at small talk is that you just have to lie all the time. It's fun." Anyone care to disprove? Of course not. They'd be a liar. Specifically a BAD liar. This was great life advice. They should follow it. Really, it was great. "I wouldn't take it personally, James. People at Hogwarts have a terrible track record of paying attention to anything less than someone holding them at wandpoint. And there's not too much improvement then either."
The vestiges of Nem's interest in reading had by now vanished entirely, out the compartment door and off the back of the train along with any interest they might have had in this conversation. They flipped all the pages once, snapped the book shut, and folded their arms over their chest. Still leaning their head against the seat backs, they stared dispassionately at the compartment wall that backed onto the train corridor. The whole time they spoke, they kept their eyes fixed ahead. "I'm getting all the life lessons today." Bernadette was somewhere on this train, maybe Nem would go and find her. Probably scare off anyone else who happened to be sitting with her, or earn a slap or punch, depending on who it was, but what was the point in having an unsavoury reputation if you couldn't have a little fun with it. Except they didn't have a whole lot of interest in seeking her out at the moment either. Maybe she'd happen by on her own. "For the record, Fox, you couldn't ruin my day. Not even by coming in here and trying to talk to me about Lucien Rosier."
A broken body, a toppling pillar. The Big Man deserved what he got, though deserving had always been a funny concept. Ultimately, weakness begot failure, and the entire situation only cemented in Nem's mind what they'd already known for years: there was only one person in the world who they could rely on. They didn't (couldn't) grieve for Lucien Rosier, who had ultimately been a stepping stone that Nem had not trusted to hold their weight for even as long as it took to decide on their next move, but they did miss him. Perhaps more accurately, they missed being seen, accepted as the person they were, even if Rosier just fell short of truly understanding them. They didn't anticipate that anyone else would ever get any closer, but it was better this way. Good that it ended when it did. Greater than good. "Anyway." Nem closed their eyes, huddled up against the seat backs, and to all intents and purposes appeared to be settling in to sleep the rest of the journey away. "Enjoy your small talk." |
