.....hmm. David's cheerful expression definitely, slowly hardened into one of chilly calculation as he listened to the professor's robotic response. He was suddenly reminded of a conversation he, Nero, and Jane had had once, a brief conversation involving a teacup and this very room. How should he reply though? As yes, with the cheer.
"What do you mean, sir, that you need to move Dr. Nero's things?" Davie had slipped out from behind his desk and silently stood next to the professor now, his hands in his trouser pockets, his fine suit (much like the department head's) with not so much as a wrinkle on it, his robes hanging lightly from his shoulders over it. "Did he... resign...?"
Er? David was almost certain he had seen the old man at that strange opening gala, the one where he'd had to pretend everything was alright for Jessica's sake, all whilst parading around with a stupid name tag that read PUREBLOOD in the world's LARGEST font on his chest. He'd hated it, though he had also spotted his department head there, and had been pretty sure they'd made eye contact and all.
He cleared his throat and nudged the former professor lightly with his elbow, elbow to elbow, man to man. "Are you alright, Admiral? You've been looking rather thin lately. I'm worried about you." And he felt terrible that he had waited so long to say anything, but the man was hardly available nowadays. Plus, Davie was no snitch, so he wasn't about to reveal a word about his newer colleague, Jane.... He'd thought it best to just change subjects entirely. Kill two basilisks with one sword. Etc. Etc.
