His words stung, leaving Nina to twist in discomfort. What made it worse was the way he avoided her gaze, instead choosing to stare at the floor as he spat the words, seething with anger.

Nina wanted to protest. She wanted to beg for Calloway’s forgiveness, but something kept her from saying more. Her guilt was sudden and all-consuming.

“You’re an awful person,” he whispered, whipping the door open and storming out of the solarium. Nina stayed through the night.
