"Well, from what I can gather, they're children born from a magical family that have no magical ability. So my mom doesn't have a wand or anything and can't use magic, but my aunt is a witch, so she can. Squibs can still see magic things, though. Like, anything that's been charmed so that Muggles can't see it or are turned away from it, Squibs can still see and interact with it. My mom figured it would just be easier to live as a Muggle, though, so she left the whole magic thing behind. She still talked to her family, though. Anyway, she met my dad, had me, then I had magic. It was kind of a shock to me and my dad to realize that magic was a real thing." It also has been a point of contention between his parents for a while, since his mom came clean. He decided not to mention that part.

He figured he was talking for long enough. "So, your family is all Muggles, except you? How did that go, when they found out you had magic?"
"Good to know. Thanks."

Eden listened to Quinn's story while contemplating how much to tell of her own. Hogwarts represented a fresh start, where nobody knew about her parents or The Events Which We Do Not Speak Of. She hadn't been bullied or mistreated by her peers or teachers back in Durham (anyone who'd attempted to speak about her situation had been, ahem, dealt with), but things got awkward a little too often. Guidance counselors were a little too involved, and everyone knew she had to meet with a social worker.

"It's just me and my brother," she started, fighting back the urge to cringe - her word choice made it sound like they were dead. Oh well. "But he's taking it pretty well, I guess. He's 24. I've always done inexplicable things, and this made them...um, explicable? He couldn't believe it at first, though. The person who brought my letter had to keep showing him more and more spells until he would accept it wasn't fake. He was still skeptical until Diagon Alley. Now he wants to move to the village by the school."
