Mamie grabbed her wand as instructed, following the headmaster and the rest of the class into the forest. When told to partner up for being eaten, she looked around for an older student. She definitely didn't want to partner with another first year, because then they might not be able to protect themselves from whatever was in the forest that was not bears.

She spotted Valencia and walked over. "Would you be my buddy?" she asked, before looking nervously over her shoulder. "Did...did you hear that?" she whispered loudly, holding her wand up in front of herself like a shield and taking a step closer to the sixth year.
