Er......she had to expose the root before cutting it? Why couldn't she just cut it right above where it went into the ground? That way the risk of touching the roots was practically nil. Unless the professor was planning on them actually removing roots before planting the new wolfsbane, which brought on a whole new set of questions regarding just letting the roots decay, thus adding back nutrients to the soil.
But before she could ask any of these questions, something more pressing happened. Well okay, not exactly pressing per se. Depended on what one thought of gnomes. Whitney herself was not a fan, but a pressing concern was not what she would call it. More of an annoyance. "Professor, can wolfsbane kill gnomes?" she asked with an innocent air. Why was she asking? Simple Ravenclaw curiosity. Possibly.
