When the younger child tried screaming, the 11 year old made a point of fixing him with a rotten look and telling him things her mummy said were okay to say if people got on your nerves. The woman didn't like it, but she took her child and went to sit elsewhere.

The sun was hitting peak sweaty-saturation in the sky, and Phoebe was already tired of peeling her sundress off of the small of her back. She was disgusting, and she needed the tallest glass of lemonade in the world. Or maybe six scoops of ice cream in a waffle cone, even if that sounded sticky.

She settled on ONE scoop with sprinkles, in a cup to preserve her hands, and emerged back into the sun with her prize. Her eyes took ages to adjust to the brightness, and when she could see again, she found herself watch Emm bully an adult and child into giving up their table. That's the spirit, kiddo.

"Hi." Phoebe settled herself across from Emm and toasted the younger girl with her cup of ice cream. "You've been shopping!"
