Could he not just explain that he was likely never having kids, and that this activity was entirely unnecessary for him?

He supposed not. It was more about learning how muggles did things, after all.

He didn't know why, exactly, other than that maybe he'd end up feeling more terrible if he messed the whole activity up. Mostly he just knew that he would rather not name it. Or personify it. Or anything.
