Heath positively beamed when Professor Rainwater said he’d done a good job. Maybe it was the professor’s encouragement, or maybe it was him still channeling Poe (or some combination of the two), but for the first time since the start of this lesson, he actually felt confident about something. He was going to practice the spell again, but they were moving on to something else. Heath’s dark eyes widened in amazement at the sight of the plant maze. Where did that come from? For the moment, he was more interested in learning how the professor made the plant maze than in the game itself. Maybe he’d ask him about it later.

Heath blinked, unsure what to make of the game. He had to give the professor props for creativity, but the directions were a tad… confusing. Okay, so they were supposed to basically ride the wheeled plants from one end of the maze to the other, and use Venenum Hortus to figure out which ones were safe to jump onto? Was that it? Merlin, he was glad those plants moved on wheels instead of levitation because Heathcliff Jones did not do heights! He almost laughed when the professor said any dramatics and they’d be out. As an aspiring actor, telling him not to be dramatic was like telling a dragon not to breathe fire, but he’d try his best.

Heath decided to practice the spell a bit more before heading into the maze, just in case his earlier success had been a fluke. Aiming his wand at the nearest plant, he cast, “Venenum Hortus!” A yellow haze appeared around the plant. “Venenum Hortus,” he said again, making the tree shape with his wand. That time an orange cloud appeared. Okay, that was enough practice! Wand in hand, he headed toward the maze. “Venenum Hortus,” he cast at the first plant that stopped near him. A blue haze appeared, and blue meant safe. Whew!

Wasting no more time, Heath got on. He hoped he wouldn’t be completely rubbish at this game! He wasn’t particularly fast at casting spells, and he did not want to get sent back to start! As his eyes scanned the plants for one close enough to jump onto, an idea occurred to him. Pretend they’re TIE fighters, he thought, and each spell cast is a TIE fighter taken out. Brandishing his wand, Heath!Dameron aimed at the nearest TIE fighter plant. “Venenum Hortus!” he cried, making the tree movement. Yellow… what did yellow mean again? Oh yeah, poisonous to touch. Definitely not using that one!

It wasn’t long before Heath was in close proximity to another plant. “Venenum Hortus!” he cast. To his relief, the haze around this plant turned blue. Now came the hard part: actually jumping from one plant to another. Unlike his quidditch player older brother, Heath was not very athletic or coordinated. He hoped he wouldn’t fall, though if he did… Since the floor was lava, was he allowed to reenact Anakin Skywalker’s defeat at the Battle of Mustafar if he fell? Was that the kind of dramatics that would get him kicked out? Probably better not risk it…

Well, here goes nothing! Heath braced himself as he jumped onto the other plant. He wobbled slightly but managed to grab on, and… no electric shock, thank Merlin! Wait, what? The professor was changing things up? What did that mean? Before he had time to think about it, his pot was suddenly spinning. Ugh, now he was getting dizzy! When it finally stopped, he noticed his plant was now going in the opposite direction. No, no no… he’d worked too hard to get sent back to start now! Heath frantically aimed his wand at the first plant he saw. “Venenum Hortus!” Red… no good. “Venenum Hortus!” Yellow… still no. “Venenum Hortus!” Orange.

Seriously, is every plant in this maze poisonous now?! Heath thought angrily, but then he remembered orange only meant poisonous to eat, not touch. That means it’s safe to jump onto, right? Only one way to find out. Heath took a deep breath to steel his nerve and jumped. He half-expected an electric shock that time, but none came. Good! Now it looked like he was finally back on track.
