Avalon was overcome with an inexplicable melancholy as she watched the jobberknoll die. She was grateful that it brought an end to the horrifying noise, but something about the way the bird settled its wings and closed its eyes was haunting to the young Ravenclaw.
Thankfully, the professor moved the lesson on relatively quickly. But it seemed that the class wouldn't get much more uplifting, since they were now to focus on preparing phoenixes for their death. At least there was a glimmer of hope and rebirth in the burning of a phoenix.

Charlie looked at Catherine as she mentioned exactly what the bird was. Charlie really was starting to feel like maybe she thought she knew everything but maybe that was just what she was good at, telling people the things she knew. But that wasn’t for now. She was going to say thanks for the information when she was told to cover her ears.
What on earth. That sound was so loud, and it was eerie, that sounded painful. She didn’t want the birds to die if it hurt them. She couldn’t tell but it sounded like it was trying to tell their professor whatever he had said but she still wasn’t sure.
Hearing that they needed to partner up she looked over at Avalon and then Catherine, “You both want to work together?” she hoped that they both said yes.
"I'd love to!" Avalon replied to Catherine and Charlie. She actually liked working with first years. Most of them were quite enthusiastic and polite.
"Anyone else need a partner? You can work with us if you need to!" she added to no one in particular. She didn't want anyone to feel left out. Not everyone was a fan of group work, after all.
