Elias may have been an 11-year-old boy, but he could tell he'd well and truly stepped in it, as the expression went. The happy beamy Bernie was suddenly looking like she might possibly cry, and he felt a sinking in his gut that he didn't really understand at this particular moment; he just knew that he had to fix it.

...but seeing as he had the emotional depth of a puddle, he couldn't exactly go the sappy 'so sorry' route (and sort of didn't think that would help?). So instead, he adopted his 'totally a bad-butt rebel' voice and commented, "Whoa, you fought a gargoyle? And you must've beat it too, because you're alive and everything. That's first rate, that is."
