Default Review: Ford vs. Ferrari, starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale

A word of caution to the viewer: You may need a Dramamine to get through the racing scenes in Ford vs. Ferrari, but it’s totally worth it. Part buddy picture, part thrill ride, the film by Academy Award-nominated director James Mangold is a true story about a friendship that changed car racing forever. Starring Matt Damon as race car driver Carroll Shelby and Christian Bale as his hot-tempered test driver Ken Miles, the film tells the story of how they helped design a race car for Ford Motor Company and get the quintessentially American company into the international world of automotive racing, against formidable, more experienced and more race-savvy competitors such as Enzo Ferrari and his legendary vehicles. Funny, riveting and poignant, Ford vs. Ferrari also features Pulitzer Prize winning Tracy Letts as Henry Ford II -- or “Deuce,” as he’s known – The Punisher’s Jon Bernthal as visionary risk-taker Lee Iacocca and Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe as Bale’s devoted wife. All the actors are at the top of their game in the picture, and kudos go to director of photography Phedon Papmichael for his beautiful, and at times dizzying, cinematography. He puts the viewer right in the car during the racing scenes in what is a high-octane, hair-raising experience that is sure to garner awards recognition this season.

Ford vs. Ferrari will release in theaters on November 15, 2019.
