Default Review: "The Aeronauts" starring Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones

The Aeronauts tells the story of daredevil balloon pilot Amelia Wren, played by Felicity Jones, who teams up with pioneering meteorologist James Glaisher, played by Eddie Redmayne. Their ambition? To advance human knowledge of the weather and fly higher than anyone in history! So just how well does this adventure soar?

First of all, this film has to be seen on an IMAX screen. The sheer size of the IMAX picture lends itself perfectly to the visuals of this film. When we are up above the clouds in the balloon, it really feels like you can reach out and touch them. Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones rekindle their on screen partnership having starred in 2014’s The Theory of Everything, for which Redmayne bagged an Oscar. Whilst there doesn’t appear to be the same buzz around the performances this time around, it is clear that the chemistry of this pairing has some legs as they both really embodied the spirit of their characters, giving the audience something to cling to as they traverse the great unknown.

Redmayne and Jones both have a tall order, given that almost all of this film is set in the small confines of an air balloon basket. But they rise to the occasion, breathing life into the gigantic IMAX picture, aided by the direction of Tom Harper, who manages to craft a story filled with breath-taking set pieces that keep you on edge from beginning to end.

The Aeronauts will release in theatres on 6 December, 2019.
