"Wonderful, most of you have managed to successfully cast the charm and revealed the true numbers of the objects in front of you!" An oversimplification, but one that was necessary for the first lesson of the term. In the upcoming months, they'd see the world isn't quite as simple. Because yes children, this is simple. Ayana had full faith everyone would be able to keep up as the lessons get progressively more complex, but it meant that they all really needed to understand today. "For those of you who haven't yet, there will be plenty of time for that during your homework assignment," Ayana's eyes twinkled and she moved to the blackboard.

"Now that we have our numbers, we are presented with a very obvious question that I'm sure has occurred to most of you; what do they mean?" she looked around the room, making sure she had everyone's attention, and tapped the board to reveal a chart. "This here is an abbreviated list of the single digit system used in Arithmalethilogy. It also appears in page thirty-five in your textbooks, so there is no reason to write it into your notes," Ayana added the last bit quickly, before any panicked quills would race across parchments in sloppy handwriting.

"Some of these number meanings are quite similar to those in predicative numerology, while others are vastly different. This is because, as we discussed, we are no longer looking at Arithmancy from a human standpoint, but rather a natural one. The deeper you go into the analysis, the more accurate the results become, and the more you can glean from a simple seven numbered series." She briefly paused, then tapped the board again to change the way the numbers of her chosen example objects were presented, with the middle figure now slightly larger.

"We will now move on to how we analyse these numbers. Initially, we always look at the fourth digit, which is the center number in the series," Ayana gestured towards said numbers. "These are the guiding force of the object, its purpose or its main state. After that, we move on to reading the series as a whole, and trying to spot some common combinations. These combinations have an added meaning, an understanding about a certain aspect of the object that would not have otherwise been clear if we had studied the digits separately."

Ayana paused again, allowing them all to take notes and to let this new information sink it. It's all in their books of course, but the written word will never be quite as efficient as a lesson. After moving to the other side of the board, Ayana smiled again. "What can you learn about the objects that you perhaps did not know before, using these numbers? What properties make themselves known instantly through the numbers? Do you see any patterns? Today is all about practicing our analysis skills, and we will carry on with this in our next lessons.

You are permitted to work in pairs or groups of threes. Please keep the noise level down, and any questions you may have, do not hesitate to ask! You will later have to hand in analysis essay to me as your homework, so this is a great opportunity to practice just that."

Good? Good.

Intime with… Ooohhhh …. Okay… Holly’s eyebrows scrunched inwards as she started again, she had just started to do the incantation again when the Professor called everyone’s attention together. Jumping Jinx’s. She was out of time. Nibbling on her bottom lip, the Slytherin felt stupid for not getting the charm to work properly for her… but she guessed there was always extra time and homework to get it right. That’s what the Professor had just said… homework. Yay.
Looking between the board, and flicking her textbook to page 35, Holly nodded a little. Okay. So the numbers and the one digit system were described here… Each number meant something different… Combinations could mean something else… They all meant something when added together… Middle number was the most important.

As the Professor spoke, Holly looked down at her own parchment. She blinked and looked at the number for the clock… and then at the meaning for the ‘0’. ”Huh.” She muttered to herself, quill running over her bottom lip.

Looking around her, for anyone that was looking for a partner, she motioned excitedly at the clock in front of her. ”The main number is o! That means Finality, Nothing and dual purpose… Well, a clock only shows twelve hours and yet there were twenty-four in every day,… Every minute that passed was final, but there was no end to the time that was to come. That’s completely a dual purpose.. How cool is that?” She wasn’t really talking to anyone in particular… just… hoping someone thought it was as cool as she did?

SPOILER!!: notes for Clock

Object: Broken Clock
Number: 8 4 2 0 1 6 0
Centre: 0 - DUAL PURPOSE - death, finality, unnatural OR emptiness, nothing, decay
Combinations / Meanings
8 - infinity, repeatable, life
4 - severe, structured, rigorous
2 - duality, unity, collaboration
Zero one (01) - Often appears in muggle made objects (plastic and other unnatural materials) and machinery that does not have magical use.
Six zero (60) - a negative event happened to the object being analysed and it's very reason for existing has been removed.

Writing out the rest of her notes, she tried to spot anything else that could be gleaned about her clock - still very happy about the centre number. Infinite, repeatable structure that unites and collaborates time… It was definitely a muggle, non-magical item… and well. It was broken! So of course something bad had happened.

Her poor clock!
