He loved to watch the shoppers hurry in and out with their packages, catching bits and pieces of holiday plans.
After grabbing a cup of black tea, he made his way to the bench to do some sunning and people watching. The past several months had been hard for Gaston. Leaving Hogwarts had left him with a broken heart that never quite healed. There were still some days he wanted to cry at the injustice of his circumstances. Some days he was so angry, he wanted nothing to do with the wizarding world, but most of the time, he just felt lost. He'd found a new home and a new job, but it wasn't the same. He didn't know what to do with himself without a gaggle of students to love and nurture, and not a day went by that he didn't think about the ones he left behind!
The feelings never went away; he was just better at hiding them some days than others. Fortunately, today was one of his better days, so he'd come to Diagon Alley on his day off to do some shopping. A certain little lady had a birthday coming up, and a shopping trip was just the thing to give him some idea of what she wanted! Gaston beamed at the little dark-haired girl at his side holding on to his hand. This time with her was the only silver lining he saw in his situation! Hop, hop, hop! Desiree bounced up and down excitedly, her favorite doll (a Beast/Prince doll painted to look like her dad) dangling limply from the hand that wasn't holding her dad's. Shopping with Daddy was fun! Mummy only ever wanted boring things like food and clothes, but shopping with Daddy meant toys! Ooh, maybe she could find a friend for her Daddy-Beast doll! "Daddy, come ooooon!" she begged, pulling on his arm as hard as she could.
She broke free of his grip and dashed down the street, stopping short of the park bench. Oh, look! There's a guy! She waved at him with both hands, dropping her doll in the process. Hiiiiiii! And... she was off. "Desiree, come back!" Gaston called, his cane click-clacking on the pavement as he ran after his daughter. He caught up to her by the park bench and soon saw she wasn't alone. He didn't know whether to laugh or panic when he saw her waving at a stranger! Not every man was as tolerant of children as he was, so there was no telling how he might react. "Sorry about-" Gaston began, giving the man an apologetic look, but his expression brightened as he recognized him. "Foster?"
