Laughter was evident in his voice, and it was because of the comment that Levi could see how Nicholas could be related to a Gryffindor like Genny Tate. "Why did you have a rocket launcher on the first place?"
He peered into the cauldron, squinting at the small bubbles forming in the surface of the water already. "You didn't miss much." Not strictly true, but Levi found he could sleep better at night if he didn't think too much about the nature of the challenges. "I stabbed a dementor, fought the Whomping Willow in a dream, saved mum from a tundra and didn't get bitten by a three headed snake." He frowned; it all sounded more exciting than it actually had been--which was terrifying. No wonder his stomach had initially rejected two of them. "Very fun." Things that Gryffindors were supposedly meant to find exhilarating and yet. He'd thrown up twice and cried that same amount of times, too. "Oh, not at all. But mum is French." That ought to explain it, surely.
A smile tugged at his lips as the water began to bubble in earnest and with his tweezers, dropped in the barbs. "It nearly broke in half, which I think could have been mended. But I was in the verge of tears and papa decided to spare me." "A necessity. What fun is having a rocket if anybody can making the same one?" That was a lesson he'd learned from his artist of a father; while a traditionalist in some ways, Nicky appreciated reasonable creativity. "I built it for fun. I did a lot of projects like that as a kid. Still do in my free time." Of course, the caliber of his undertakings had greatly increased since then, but the enjoyment they provided remained constant.
Passing the barbs to Levi, he idly began to clean a stirrer for the next step. "Sounds like I missed a lot. Hope your mam was okay." Word had traveled about how well students had handled the situation, and Nicholas was more than certain he wouldn't have done the same. "I was there for the last one. You were pretty impressive." It was a severe understatement, but he was not one to praise— even such a light comment was rare.
He had known Levi's mother was French, although he did not understand that fact's connection to music and therefore declined to reply. "They always know when to save us." The Hufflepuff smiled as well, but it quickly morphed into a look of consternation as he lowered the stirrer into the cauldron. Clockwise movements, carefully.
He didn't want to explode a Hogwarts champion. Surely, that would warrant more swirlies than he was used to.
