Not at all skilled enough at defensive magic to guess what spell Althea's brother was casting, the Hufflepuff could only speculate that the Runespoor was now experiencing confusion of some sort. It was working! But that was a fairly large snake, and there was no telling how long a seventeen year old could maintain that kind of charm without keeling over and being ingested.
All those who were greeting his companion for the day went ignored; Nicky's eyes were glued to the screen.
Now it was his turn to crush Althea's fingers.
Althea could only nod at Nicholas' observation, while her mind went to other places. She kept seeing images of her brother's untimely death in her mind and she really could not handle it. Yes, she knew that they would
probably step in if Levi was too close to death but how did she know for sure that they would keep that promise?
The fifth year bit down harder on her lower lip and her left leg bounced up and down, her anxiety working through her in the worst way possible. "
They won't let him die, right?" her voice was low and she was extremely uncertain. She needed Nicholas to lie and tell her that Levi would make it out alive. For a brief moment, Althea looked to what the other competitors were doing and, not for the first time, she felt like gagging. How was this something that tested their skills as students? And for
what a scholarship? Ridiculous.
Nicholas squeezing her hand just as tightly as she squeezed before, jolted her out of her stupor and she looked around to see how everyone else was taking the challenge.
