People grabbed partners so fast, and Katy wasn't inclined to scramble. What was it that old Muggle actress said? She didn't want anyone who didn't want her. So she was available if someone needed her, but in the meantime, she was going to make herself a popcorn ball. Learning new spells, especially kitchen ones, was dead useful.
Katy gathered the bowl of unpopped popcorn kernals and returned to her seat. The hard little kernals rattled against each other in the bowl, but it wasn't hard to imagine what they would look like once popped and fluffy white. That was the important part, actually, being able to imagine what the outcome of the spell would be. Fluffy, warm, delicious popcorn.
"[i]Calefacio[i]," she murmured the spell without the wand motion, getting the feel for the incantation in her mouth. No weird vowels or slippery consonants in there. She unholstered her wand and pointed it at the bowl. "Calefacio." For real this time. She waved the wand over top of the bowl, gently heating the kernels until they popped.
