She caught the thrown bottle and obligingly uncapped it and gave it a good sniff.

"It smells like rotting roses." Char confirmed. "I like it better when Pip smells like dog things. Grass is okay. And sand. And dirt. The clean kind of dirt." Pip, the family crup, was getting on in crup-years now. They had taken him on their family vacation to The Maldives and while he'd managed a few swims and runs along the sandy beaches, mostly he'd stayed in the shade and slept, and wagged his tail any time anyone came to check on him.

But if you asked Charlotte he hadn't changed one little bit.

"We should get him a new collar."
