Blaise was listening to the instructions, now realizing the Potions aspect--not that he'd have asked. The boy found it more usual than not that the classes this term weren't making sense. Not logical sense anyway. Now they were making food.
As much as he wanted to be put off, how could he when he was starving and they would soon be fed? That sounded like a win to him. An even bigger win came when he heard they'd be muggle fire making. Not that he was opposed to simply sharing a fire with someone else if it DID require magic. Speaking of, Blaise had been watching the confrontation between the younger Snake and the Not!Moxley Professor and immediately decided to share with him. He'd seen enough to know this wouldn't end well and made a beeline for the boy. "Let's work together. I think we're both a little behind." And without waiting, the Gryffindor took hold of the boy firmly and pulled him over to his pile of wood.
Having already collected the box of matches, the boy took a moment to light the fire before turning to the Second Year and pointing to the half filled page of his notepad where a message waited for him at the end. Leaving the boy to read and hopefully get it, Blaise went to get the tripod stand and collect the needed ingredients. This didn't seem SO hard. A little clear thinking and he now had his cauldron firmly seated. "You can cut the cabbages while I get some water." And they could pretend to be somewhere else together if he liked. Just no more; the anger was threatening to set in again, just when he'd gotten rid of it. He was so frustrated and angry. Nothing in this class was going to stay with him now, because all he could think about was how unbelievably unfair this woman was being. Not that he would ever make either of these recipes on his own, because being a very small Korean meant using cabbage in a very different way than this stew stuff, but still. It was the point of it all. He couldn't do the colour-changing charm because all he associated it with was art, because of the lesson, and now he would forever be turned off of the idea of eating however you said this stuff because he'd just remember being punished for not having a 'regular' name.
The grip on his arm shook his attention, and Jaemin only caught half a glance at Blaise before the taller Gryffindor boy was moving him. His frustration was giving way to upset, and he didn't like the painful lump in the back of his throat, nor the slight prickling behind his eyes. The small Slytherin drew a soft, shuddering breath and let Blaise shuffle him away, a slight tremor in his still balled-up fists. He didn't say a word as the other boy went about lighting his fire, just stood there until he was handed the notepad.
It only took him a moment to read it and understand it, and when he looked up from the page Blaise was already coming back. He nodded lightly at the tall boy, hurt still evident in his eyes as he held out the notepad for him to take; his own things were actually very close to where Blaise was set up, and he moved to pull them over to the Gryffindor's station instead, only taking a moment to put out his own small fire. With magic, because this was still Potions class.
"I don't mind cutting up the cabbages," he murmured, voice quiet as he settled himself on the ground and opened the small chest with the ingredients inside. "I help mom do it when we make kimchi at home."
That involved a lot more cutting, though. This would be easy in comparison, and give him a reason to not look at the Muggle Studies professor anymore. |
