Got it? Got it. She shook her head to herself. This was ridiculous. Haddie was wasting her time. She had done it on purpose, Katherine was sure. She was going to pay, though. Katherine didn't know HOW, but she was.
The older girl looked alarmed for a moment when the little girl uttered a name excitedly - but it turned out to be just a stuffed animal - a rabbit, to be precise. Okay, good. Katherine relaxed, but Haddie turned sullen. Why? She didn't have a lot of friends? This was absurd. The whole Ravenclaw girl dormitory was her friend - though, of course, she didn't know that. But Katherine also didn't think she had few friends when she was younger. People loved girls like her - funny, carefree, bold... But she also looked so innocent, and Katherine felt bad for a split second before she remembered why they were having this conversation in the same place: Haddie had messed up on purpose. "I don't, either," she said and shrugged in a manner that showed she didn't care. And she didn't. Except for the moments when she'd secretly cried for being so alone an unwanted, but that was in the past. Now she - didn't need friends. "Don't worry though," she said a little bir more kindly, "you'll have lots if the stupid potion works."
Why was it taking so long?
Her heart broke a little again when Haddie looked so somber. Maybe she was being too hard on the girl. Maybe Haddie had changed involuntarily too - like he lack of friends or something forced her. Maybe... Don't fall for it, it is just an act. You KNOW she did it on PURPOSE. This kind of people are losers, and you're going to win. "Whatever," she muttered in the end. She didn't want to look too soft just because Haddie was seven years old. On the contrary, she hated the girl more. She stole her spotlight, and even though Professor Newton had said otherwise, he was definitely blaming Katherine for it.
Haddie was going to pay for this.
In her distraction, it took Katherine too long to work out who 'he' was. "No-!" she uttered, but before she could effectively shoot a spell to stop the girl, the bloody ferret was out. "Petrificus Totalus!" she cried as she pointed her wand at the ferret instead. Hopefully, the animal was a slow one and was hit by the spell; because she wasn't going to move one single finger to catch it if the animal ran away. "But, it's boring!" Ah the whining of a seven year old. This was the most boring room in the history of boring rooms. Kinda pretty though, but still boring.
Did she mention the room was boring?
At least she had Tucker the ferret was in here. He was going to be fun, she could tell. And then a swiggly jet of light erupted from Kat's wand hitting the spot the swift and energetic ferret had been a second before. Tucker bolted for Hadley, seemingly unperturbed by the fact she wasn't nearly as tall as she used to be. It just made it easier for him to climb onto her shoulder. Haddie swung her body so that she was between Kat and Tucker and stomped her foot dramatically. "Don't hurt him! He's my friend." She had lots of animal friends. "He's nice, see? He won't hurt you." She walked over to Kat, reached out and gently took the older girl's hand, leading it to where Tucker sat on her shoulder. "Pet him."
Then she made her way back to her bed and sat down, thinking about what Kat had said earlier. "You don't have friends?" Haddie sounded genuinely surprised. The little girl hugged Mr. Poppy and Tucker. Her legs swing from the side of the bed. It was hard to imagine the older girl, who seemed to have that I don't have time to bother with you attitude that cool kids had, didn't have friends. But that was something they had in common. "People don't like me because I make weird things happen all the time." At least that was what she told herself. She pretended it didn't bother her, but it did. Deep down it did. "Is that why you don't have friends?" Legs still swinging over the side, the little girl perked up suddenly. "I'll be your friend!! But you have to promise you won't hurt Tucker!" She paused a moment, thinking. "Are you sure his name is Tucker? He doesn't seem like a Tucker."
It was a great idea! They'd play dolls together, make up stories, play sports. And do all the things that best friends do and...huh? Did she hear that right? She'll have lots of friends when the potion works? "I-I will?" There was never a more disbelieving shocked expression in the history of disbelieving shocked expressions. Then she set Tucker down on the bed and started to leap and bounce as high as the bed would let her. She was going to have friends!! And Kat was definitely one of those friends. Wasn't she?
The little girl settled down from her jumping and bouncing and looked at Kat curiously. "We're friends right?"
