"Today's my birthday," he managed, voice coming out very small and soft. "And there were nifflers all over the kitchen when I went... but they all ran away and I didn't even get to pet one, professor. Not one."

He couldn't even bring himself to point out the fact that all he wanted in this world was a niffler for a pet. Despite Haddie's insistence that he not be sad, he was soooooo sad about the entire thing. One didn't just recover from a three year dream being shattered in a day, you know? He had been cheated.

"We can do the thing today though..." it was okay. Plants were his favourite distraction, after all. Far ahead of nifflers.
Oh goodness! Paul hadn't even KNOWN! What a terrible, horrible professor he was! "Oh gosh....Jay! I am so sorry--I had no idea! We must celebrate!" he smiled a little. "After we forage--celebration! You're twelve now, I take it?" he asked softly.

Hmm. Listening to Jay's story...hmm. "That sounds odd...why were there nifflers in the kitchens?" Did James know about this? "Maybe we can...walk over there later and see if..Professor Draper will let you pet one? Explain it's your birthday and whatnot..." and also inform the Creatures guy that his animals were loose? "Are you...sure there were nifflers?" It felt silly to ignore that...to collect seaweed from the lake???

Paul didn't feel like going over there yet though UGH
