She'd just finished bribing a particularly dependable-looking owl down from its perch when she heard the frustrated scream. Since the owl seemed to be giving her a look that suggested it wouldn't return if she sent it off empty-taloned, she finished securing the letter to its leg, gave it some food, and carried it (admittedly with some difficulty, as it was absurdly heavy for a creature with hollow bones) to the window.
Then, she went to see what the screaming was all about.
"...Kitty? What's wrong?" Had an owl pecked her? She suspected that would be a nasty surprise.
Kitty's screaming had startled some of the owls, causing them to flap their wings and hoot at her in rebuke. She sighed and crumpled up her paper, throwing it into the basket next to her.
But the owls were not the only ones who had heard her screaming.
"Oh hi Julia." Kitty tried to smile at her friend, but she had been here so long that it was hard.
"I'm writing a letter to my mom about how we were almost eaten alive by that monster and her stupid bird. I bet tomorrow it's going to be on the cover of the Daily Prophet, and I don't want her to worry. I'm worried that she might pull me out of Hogwarts when she finds out or that she will come storming in here and try to interview all the teachers and all the students involved." She was a journalist after all, and that seemed like the kind of thing she might do and Kitty was afraid she'd never be able to live down the embarrassment if she did that.
Kitty sighed and tried to get a little distracted.
"Are you writing to your parents too?"
