"Hi, sir," the eleven-year-old replied a little timidly, all the words he had intended to say suddenly catching at the tip of his tongue and making his mouth feel awfully dry. "I..." He paused, looking down at the note in his hand, then extended it for Airey to take. "I wanted to show you what I wrote when you asked us why we study astronomy in class yesterday. I... prefer to keep to myself in a classroom setting, but I wanted you to know that my silence was not from a lack of interest or attention."
That was an important distinction, one he thought Airey would see as quite valuable. Sir. Right. He ought to nip this little habit in the rear.
"No need for sir, Mr. Kettburn," he replied the young man. "Professor will do just fine." Or simply omit that formality period. He wouldn't be fazed either way.
Accepting the parchment, the astronomer did not yet begin to read it over and instead listened to what the first year had to say. It was almost endearing. Almost. But the Head of House could play along as though he truly found it to be. He was feeling more sentimental recently. "Rest assured, Mr. Kettleburn, that I did not doubt your motivation," he assured the boy. "I know scintillation when I see it." Meaning the first year's innate interest in the subject matter. "But I appreciate you bringing this by to show me," he continued, his blue eyes only reading over the first third of the boy's writing. "You show incredible insight and understanding."
He paused to continue reading.
