Carl smiled back at Professor Finch. Yes, many of the magical portraits were helpful. They were like the Ghosts, who always provided help to First Years when they needed it. Though to be honest, he was more often scared than relieved in the presence of a Ghost, because he was still not used to the knowledge that one did exist.

He listened to the exercise they were going to do. Which portrait was he going to choose? Carl saw Ariadne questioning Artemesia Timms about Quidditch and Norah attempting to ask the empty portrait of Lucian Warrington some questions, which made him grin. He looked around as Henric asked whether he wanted to join them and talk to the empty portrait. "Nah, I think I will join you guys later." He replied, because the elderly man with the crazy-scientist look - Augustus Flume - had caught his attention. With that, he moved towards the magical portrait.
"Hello! I like your hair," he said and beamed at the man, before realizing that that was not a question. "So uh, no offense but are you like alive?"
