Rocks... and their links to the field of astronomy and the planet as a whole. Was the whole class going to be about rocks? Was THAT why Pebbles was here, and MORE pet rocks were going to be offered up for adoption? A class... about... rocks.
Well, could've been worse. Somehow. Probably.
Soph kicked back (not literally) and let everyone else respond because they seemed to be super excited to offer up their answers. By the time most of her classmates got their turn, there wasn't a WHOLE lot left to say, at least about rocks in GENERAL... but eventually, Soph's hand raised anyway because she knew better than to stay too silent in Airey's class. He always gave her that LOOK like, Come on, Sophie Brown, quit holding out on me.
"Uhhh, so... rocks have an important link to astronomy 'cause... well, okay, first 'n foremost, I'm sure this is NOT where you're goin' with this question, but I'm gonna go my own way - so the kinda rocks we'd be talking about on planetary bodies are made up of silicates, right? Which are rock-forming minerals made up of oxygen and SILICON," hence the name, for those young'uns who didn't know, "'n this is important 'cause there's hardly ANY rock in our whole Solar System when y'think about it 'cause there's WAY more hydrogen atoms than silicon atoms in the whole Solar System, like 20,000 hydrogen atoms to ONE silicon atom or somethin' wild, so rock is gonna be pretty scarce compared to the hydrogen that makes up a lot of the Jovial planets. BUT," because she was going somewhere with this, "rock DOES make up the majority of the inner terrestrial planets 'cause..." briefly distracted by Zander's face and his ridiculous smile next to her rahhhh, "'cause... the more 'bundant materials in the Solar System like hydrogen, methane, 'n..." there was another one in particular, ammonia, she couldn't quite get off the top of her tongue, "... 'n they can't condense to hang out with the rock 'cause of the Sun's HEAT on the inner planets - they're HOTTER since they're closer to the Sun so it's harder for those planets' bodies to hold onto those lighter elements, y'know?" DID HE KNOW? WAS SHE MAKING ANY SENSE? "So since the lighter materials can't cling onto the inner planets' atmosphere, but silicon 'n oxygen CAN, they'll condense 'n form the silicates that makes the rock of our inner planets." Or something. "But there IS rock at the core of the outer planets, too, s'just not a lot, whereas rock DOES dominate in the inner planets 'cause of... thermal energy 'n..." stuff, "yeah." Better than stuff. "Important 'cause we NEED 'em."
Got a little carried away there, but she was done.
