Even though they were clearly only borrowing Bob, Professor Cassie might still get mad at them and Toby didn't want to be the one to bring her attention that way.

Toby let out the tiniest of sighs. He couldn't get started until he had a partner, though for all those reasons he was kind of reluctant to actively seek one out. Instead, he put the sieve on his head and slumped a little in his seat, thinking hard. And then, THEN, the answer came to him and he looked back at the professor. She was the one who was most upset about Bob, so clearly she'd be the one least likely to have borrowed him. She didn't need to borrow Bob; she already had him. That way he could participate, worry-free.

"Professor?" Toby said, and the sieve on his head wobbled but stayed up there. "Can I try it out on you? Can you be my partner?" He looked at her beseechingly. "Please?"
