Y'know, it probably would've been a better idea to bring his own calculations along. But unfortunately, that ship had sailed. His paper was far too difficult to reach at the moment since this room was like an obstacle course of piled up desks. ... Was he being too dramatic? Maybe.

"Okay so it looks like you've done everything right so far," he said looking up from the paper. "It's only real confusing looking 'cause the number's so complicated." How the heck was he supposed to explain addition??? Merlin, six years of school did not prepare him for this. "Maybe try to break down the addition into smaller chunks so you haven't got to do it all at once?" Yes that was his GRAND trick. Not really much of a scientific break through... But, y'know.

"See how I grouped them off into smaller chunks?" That would make it tons easier, plus they were smaller numbers so the Hufflepuff could probably use his fingers to count. Shhh don't laugh. Everyone does it. Especially Zander Adair. But HEY he got an excellent score on his OWL so CLEARLY it was a good way of doing things, okay? Don't judge. "So for the first chunk that's 4+4, that equals eight," He scribbled down on the parchment. Hope Ian doesn't mind. Ahem. "See?" He nodded his head as if to tell the boy to work the rest out on his own. "Just make sure to write these smaller calculations on the side so that it doesn't confuse you for the actual reduction stuff." Because that would be bad.

He paused to let the Hufflepuff calculate a few for his own before adding, "then, once you've got all your little chunks calculated, you can add all of those up to get your grand total number and that'll answer the equation you had written before!" he pointed at the "4+4+1+3+1+5+5+6+5+1=" the Hufflepuff had written earlier. "I got 35 as my answer for that part," he whispered. Y'know, just so Ian could check to see if he was on the right track. "And once you get there the reduction is easy!" So uh, was it going to work? "Does that make any sense?" Was he following? 'Cause if not Zander could try to explain it some other way or something...
