1. I think so, yes. Basically, we all 'grow' traits based on our past experience, whatever happens to us in childhood and how we grow up is essential to building up our personality. I think if Tom had a more caring, understanding environment, somewhere he felt her truly belonged in instead of having to hide who he was, he would've turned out differently.
