"Oh yes, comfort. Good, Mister Mordaunt. Not normally what one would think of with ice, but you bring up a very valid point." Especially in the summertime.

Stretching her legs out in front of her, she happily nodded and made a noise of agreement. "We sometimes forget this very fact too. We'll be discussing this a bit more later on in the lesson."

Streeeeeeeetch.

Reaching for her toes, the professor took a moment of silence before speaking to everyone, "So their benefit is that they can be created and eliminated in more than one way. That is a very good point, Miss Wojack. This is actually an important aspect we should always realize, especially if we find ourselves stranded from either mundane or magical components."

Wiggling her toes within her boots, she nodded slowly as the next answer came in...

Her expression brightened a bit. "Yes, good Mister Baines. Too much of something can have it's downfalls, fire and ice being no different."

Sitting up straight, Medea smiled and hummed a noise of agreement.

"Yes, we should remember, not only do they have their benefits and disadvantages as individual elements, but joined together they will counter each-other out." Which was either a pro or con depending on the situation.

Hopefully a con.

This right here, Medea gave a few extra nods.

"I hope everyone is taking notes, because there are a lot of valid points your classmates are making. They both indeed have their unpredictable moments, especially when not handled with care so to speak. Yet they both have wonderful benefits both in comfort and for the existence of species. Excellent, Miss Clarke."

Or as Airey would say...Stellar!

Defense was indeed something she was looking for in answers. "Keep this line of thought, Miss Carrington. We'll be discussing more of it in just a little bit." After everyone had their turn in answering the question perhaps.

There was that peasants word again.

Opening her mouth out to speak, she paused for a moment before shutting it again. Umm.

"Perhaps, in novels..." So it wasn't ENTIRELY wrong. She supposed. Unfortunately.

One thing about language was...you had to know it to understand it.

Though Medea tried her best to grasp what the third year was explaining, nodding her head in understanding even if she didn't understand most of it. "Right, they do have a rather destructive nature."

She kept a mental note to ask him to stay behind as well.

Eyebrows raised in amusement as her gaze setteled upon the second year.

"Don't tell me you're hungry, Mister Scabior." Har har har.

Seriously though, did he have breakfast? Most important meal of the day!

Did Eden eat breakfast too? There was plenty of talk of food going around.

Medea grinned at the talk of s'mores, mentally echoing it as shmoes. "Excellent, Miss McGee."

Food. More food.

Although she was suspecting it was because it was one of the more common ideas when it came to fire. Warmth and food. "That's quite a major benefit, yes. Good." she smiled with a simple nod.

Here's to thinking a bit more outside of the box!

"Medical purposes! I don't believe that was mentioned as of yet." she happily commented, scooting back into her lotus position. "Wonderful thought, Mister Tempus. Ice indeed has many benefits when it comes to injuries and illnesses."

"They do indeed." she mused for a moment. "Keep this thought in mind, Miss Guidry. We may come back to it in a moment."

"Excellent, Miss Brown." she nodded to the Ravenclaw. Hitting multiple targets with one stone in her response.

With the performance they had before the lesson began, she was surprised to hear Angel participating at all. Good for her though! And with an excellent answer. "Yes! Great thought, Miss Valentine. It is quite common for people to use fire as a means of locating others in cases of emergency."

"Sort of?" she repeated, smile growing. "Quite true, although with your wording, it'd depend on the spell being used to extinguish the flames. You may end up with flames in a more cold and frozen element."

"Good, Mister Rehman." she nodded to the prefect. "Rather essential for our everyday basic needs."

Oh, they had not heard fire's side of the story when it came to healing yet.

"Are you aware of any other forms of healing fire can do, Mister Tinker?"

Curiosity of the boy's knowledge had overtaken her.

Oh? Medea's smile grew a little. She particular loved to hear that word in defense class. Depends. At lot of what they learned and discussed depended on what the situation was.

"All in all, their uses don't rely in just benefits." she nodded slowly. "But benefits they do have, and it's quite wonderful that you brought up healing."

Making a small noise of agreement, she absentmindedly let the little mechanical bird run loose again; sprinting around the woman once again. "Excellent, Miss Rawthorne."

Relaxing her posture... she suddenly sat up straight again, pointing towards the fourth year before retracting her hand. Ahem. "This. This is quite an important note to take. Air and water can aid fire if used correctly, or...incorrectly. Whichever perspective you wish to view it as."

People should write that down. Even if it was half on topic and half off topic.

On the other hand, she was intrigued with his view on the strength of ice and fire. "I see your point, Mister Newell..." she began, thinking over what to say. "However, fire cannot create as much damage to stone as ice or water?"

Hmmmm?

Her mood had lifted greatly since the students began answering. Especially with all these out of the box thinking going on. "That is quite true." she nodded in a bit of surprise. Honestly, she didn't think that sort of answer would have come up, but there it was! "Even if burning down nature is viewed as wrong to most, it is actually a beneficial act, depending on the situation."

Again, depends. Such a lovely word.

...but she didn't know that little fact. "Does it really?" She'd heard of mint helping nausea, but not ice. How intriguing!

Oh? She didn't expect poetry to be given as an answer, despite the Slytherin being rather correct in her response. "Fun fact... did you know that some had thought to believe that the poem was based on a scientific opinion from astronomer Harlow Shapely?" Whether it was true or not, who knows.

She done a little research on astronomers in her spare time, yes.

"Like yin and yang." She nodded to the Hufflepuff. "Good, Mister Lecium."

Depends. The word practically sang perfection.

"Yes, excellent." she smiled and nodded to the second year.

Her posture relaxed, having been rather content with Cutty's response. "Much like a fiery phoenix, symbolizing rebirth." she nodded in agreement. If that was what she was to take away from his fire comment that is. She couldn't help but chuckle however, just slightly.

Ice was indeed a good hiding place.

"Wonderful response, Cutty. Excellent."

Did that answer blow anyone's mind?

'Cause she already knew that fact and it still did. "Yes...actually. Good."

People should...write that down.

"Good, Miss Ackerly." she nodded. No one was particular wrong, so she was right.

"Keep that offense and defense in mind, Miss Wayne. We'll be getting back to this in a short while." Well, sometime soon. Eventually.

"Reflection. We hadn't had that answered yet." And quite true as well! "Excellent, Miss McAlistor."

"Basically, you are all correct in answers..." Except maybe one, but even she had a point given the right circumstance. "But I would like to focus primarily on the defense and offense uses of fire and ice... with emphasis on ice. However, a good handful of your responses were related to the basic needs of humans. So, I have a bit of theory question for you all before we continue on."

"Do you think the human race could survive without either fire or ice? And... what about the differences between the muggle and wizarding world. Would the survival rate between the two be different?" There was no right or wrong answer though she was not looking for talk of superiority either.

Just curiosity and food for thought.

*************

She could ask, of course, though whether or not she'd receive an answer was the real question.

.....

....

Silent treatment.

Moving into regular cross criss apple sauce position, she was intrigued with all the answers given so far, and Kace's response was no different. Though a little reminder poked her in the back of her mind.

"Mmhmm..." she slowly nodded her head before continuing, "However, it would depend on what you are referring to when you mention the appearance of food here in the wizarding world, compared to the muggle world. Something to keep in mind, actually this is a good reminder for everyone to keep in mind: Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration. We simply are unable to conjure food from out of thin air... BUT, we may duplicate, summon, and enlarge already existing sustenance." Unfortunately. Oh the loopholes of the wizarding world.

"I would advise to try and not rely on this fact too much if the situation arises though, and plan ahead wisely and accordingly. Going through resources quickly can become quite the troubling factor that can lead to life and death situations." If there ever came a time when they needed to ration food that is.

Did she ever mention how nice it was to hear someone answering a topic from what they learned in an entirely different class? Because it was, and the pleased smile upon her face felt as if it'd stick for a good few minutes. No matter what. "Everything, Mister Rogers?" she questioned lightly. He wasn't wrong, though she wasn't saying he was right either.

It was an open theoretical discussion after all.

"Don't get me wrong, I do understand your viewpoint." She bowed her head somewhat to the first year. "Though, for just a moment, since we're on the topic of lack of essential needs, how do you imagine the world if potions were non-existent now since, theoretically, fire no longer exists?"

Would the magical race dwindle? Would the muggles have the upper hand? Would nothing change? Would the magical world and muggle world collide and work together?

Big questions for a youngster.

Medea smiled, shutting her eyes momentarily as she nodded. "Quite right. And I'm not saying theoretically either since there have been cases supporting your assumption." As well as other scientific theories, but tying theories into a theoretical discussion got messy and long. "We as humans have gotten used to our environment as it is, and with a sudden climate change as loosing heat or cold, we would be thrown into a shock both physically and mentally."

The world after climate change though? Probably not a very pretty place.

This...yes.

She may or may not have clapped silently. More than likely.

"The same could be thought of with ice as well though," she started, nodding towards the Ravenclaw. "Not being able to live on an ice cold planet where very little grows I mean, however... I myself agree that ice is just as important as fire. Especially with it's uses in liquid form."

Although, in her own theory if it came down to it, they'd probably have a better chance in an ice age than a world without heat. Depending on if the sun still existed that is. Otherwise, end of the world doom.

Fun thoughts!

Oooh?

Attention focused upon the Gryffindor, her eyebrows furrowed slightly in thought. Of course, not in disagreement, though it was an unusual response compared to the third year's classmates. "When it comes to the creation of heat... there is always a way to find it, but... ice and coolness are another story entirely and you're probably correct in your assumption that some places in the world will be lacking in that department. Especially if the knowledge of cooling and ice spells in the wizarding community are insufficient, or if the places in question sit near or upon the equator."

If one wanted to experience heat, start trekking down south.

Taking a moment's time for a breath, she smiled and continued softly, "Perhaps in these theoretical times of crisis, it would move the muggle and wizarding worlds to unite to find a solution." But that was a conversation for another time!

"Naturally, this is just theoretical views for now, but, perhaps we'll add a question or two on this in our homework from today's lesson." Maybe. Juuuust maybe. Though she was rather pleased with everyone's response!

Checking her watch, she slipped it back into her vest pocket before standing up. "Alright, I'd like each of you to take out your quill and parchment, and write down in large letters... the incantation of one cooling or ice spell you know. It doesn't have to be one that you can actually perform, but just one that you've heard of. When you're done, I'd like you to raise it into the air for us to see. If you can't think of any, please take out your quill and parchment anyhow if you haven't already so you may take notes."

And if they weren't taking notes already...

Oh my. Best make some friends who did.

GOOD she had liked the s'mores answer. Eden's stomach RUMBLEDDD because s'mores sounded so yummy right now, though. Maybe she'd have to make some later.

Back to the topic at hand. Fire and Ice.

Could humans survive without either or? The mean head girl had said something interesting--without both, they could live neutrally? Maybe. Eden raised her hand a bit and bit her lip nervously...this was a very THOUGHT provoking class, indeed. "Well, I do think we could survive without either, but it would make existence very hard. Fire and ice had come to be of great convenience for us humans." YEAH. Way to sound SMART, Ed! She wanted to high five herself, but that would just be clapping, now wouldn't it?

NOW. They had to take some parchment out--already had some out, yay. But Eden wasn't sure she knew any icey spells? Was Glacius the freezing spell? Eden didn't know. She wasn't sure. She almost felt like she had made up that spell.

But she wrote it down anyways, in biiiig letters:

"Glacius.."

There. Freezin'.
