It sort of made everyone else's chance at points look pretty small.
Plus, the girl didn't enjoy Dot's answer about being delightful. This was not her audience, clearly.
Unicorn hair, though. Dot could do that. It was the shiny hair that she'd looked through earlier. She tugged on her fancy-pants new gloves before rescuing a single hair, and then it was laid on the feather. Oh, okay, no. That was wrong. Dot watched the girl again out of the corner of her eye before rearranging the feather.
"I'm Dima's favorite." No points there, but it was the best thing in the world to be. Unbothered that Dot didn't respond to her lighthearted comment about being Culloden's favorite, Soph watched the girl curiously, smiling as she seemed to change her mind about the right way to go about their next instructions, and offered her a nod when she was finished. "Right on."
Dima's favorite? Awwww. "That's cute," Soph grinned big, even giggling a little at the thought. "Does that make you best friends?" Or was Dot just kidding about being Dima's favorite? Text Cut: TGO Quote:

It sounded as much, but they had been too slow in the beginning, and these were steps they ought to do quickly.
As Culloden moved about the room, Soph kept an eye on the various things that were happening - from Zahra and Culloden actually seeming to sort of get along to Tobes moving about the classroom and becoming everyone's friend... AND getting six points for it. She eyed Culloden - did he realize that was ONE point more than he'd just given her? Hmmm? Was that some sort of payback for not getting to class early enough to sit at her usual spot near his desk? Probably.
She felt a tinge of jealousy toward Tobes at that moment, though, and couldn't help but briefly reflect on how well-liked he was and how purely good he was. Always helpful, way smarter than he gave himself credit for, and... all kinds of perfect in her eyes.
And for the first time, instead of feeling equal to him in their relationship, Sophie felt less than him.
Though her mood had dropped like a rock in that instant, she didn't get to dwell on those thoughts too long for she heard the name "Javier" and her gaze immediately shot to Culloden - haha! Did Culloden call Thompson "Javier" in front of students? HEHEHEEHEHE. She giggled at that and thought of Toby calling him Javy and... thought about a bunch of other related things following that.
Merlin.
Her mood was plummeting dangerously once more in the span of seconds, but it was saved by Culloden giving them more instructions - it was easy to shove away thoughts and emotions when there was a task at hand. Pulling a large, clean measuring cup toward her, Sophie removed her glove to pick up her wand and cast, "Aguamenti," into the measuring cup to measure out and add the one liter of water to her cauldron. Notice. Notice. Notice.
Oh, um. "How much of a leech is head?" Help, Older Girl person? With her gloves still on, Dot removed one of the little leeches and held it up for inspection.
Soph smiled, catching Dot's actions out of the corner of her eye. She hadn't even needed any help and was keeping up with her just fine! "Good job, Dot," she nodded her chipper approval despite her struggle to keep bad feelings from surfacing. And at her question... well. Soph scourgified their tabletop, set her wand down, put her clean glove back on her bare hand, and picked up one of her own leeches to show Dot the underside of it. "Y'see, here's the mouth... so this side is the head, and if you squeeze it a little along the body y'can kind of feel its insides, but roughly right 'round here's the brain, and just a little ways down right here is where the hearts should be," she thought, "so y'wanna make your cut in this area here."
She'd show her, even. Soph plucked a squeaky-clean cutting knife from her potions kit, set the leech on the table between her and Dot, and only took a moment to judge roughly where the halfway point between the brain and hearts would be. "It's more of a careful approximation than an exact way to go about it, but as long as y'don't get much more than this much of the tip, you're probably okay." Not all leeches were the same, after all, so all one could really do was take an educated guess at the best place to cut.
Was that enough help? Soph offered Dot another smile, hoping it was good enough for her, then went ahead and repeated the step two more times so she had three leech heads in all. Then she methodically added one leech head to the cauldron at a time, curiously peeking down at the water below to see how all the ingredients were reacting to each other as each individual leech head joined the contents. When all three were added, she scooped the bodies of the leeches and wrapped them up into one of her napkins and set it aside. She'd... put that in the trash later. And she needed to learn how to vanish things. Sigh.
She removed a glove to pick up her wand again and quickly cleaned everything she'd just made messy - the tabletop, her gloves, the cutting knife, then the metal stirrer she'd use next, too, even though she'd already cleaned it once. Didn't hurt to make sure it was super clean of germs, though, yeah? She slid the newly-cleaned glove back onto her hand, picked up the metal stirrer, and stirred exactly ten times clockwise. No more, no less. Perfect.
For now, Soph set the metal stirrer aside on a napkin - she'd clean it next time she was set to do more necessary wandwork - and picked up her clean cutting knife to slice a ginger root in half. Glancing at her watch to see where the time would start, Soph added the half of the ginger root to the cauldron and made a mental note of when the two minutes would be up.
While she had the spare time - there was really no such thing as spare time in potions, she knew, for she could always be doing something to prepare for later - she took her gloves off, scooped her wand back up, and busied herself with cleaning everything that needed to be cleaned at her workstation. Super ON THE BALL.
