They looked like someone had dumped them there. They were probably broken or something. So after looking around one last time, the first year got out her wand and...

Then switched it to the other hand. And back again. Held it the wrong way. Tried to balance it on the palm of her hand. Hmm. She needed to figure out how to best make use of it. And for that she FIRST needed to figure out how to hold it properly. Finally she settled with holding it with both hands, like a heavy sword. Like that she turned on one of the suits of armor.
