Deep breath. Nate had to keep his cool in front of the class. Thankfully he could easily achieve that. All he had to do was take deep breaths, look on the bright side of things, and just keep reminding himself they would get to the bottom of this.

This was odd of Nate to do though. Him being the first hand in the air. Now that was weird...in Muggle Studies too! Is there going to be a Blue Moon tonight or something!? What was happening here! This wouldn't end very well for Nate. Silently glancing over to Cael, he gave her a nod of his head to acknowledge her. That was the polite thing to do at least.
"Exactly right" Hadley nodded at Nate's answer.

"Uh Professor I heard the word senescence used once before by some medical examiner who was talking about natural death as opposed to unnatural death. He said senescence was considered a natural death because it applies to biological aging and the gradual deterioration of functional lifeforms...like us. He said the word senescence comes from the latin word, senescere meaning to grow old,"
"Precisely. So being kissed by a dementor, for instance, would be unnatural. As is the aging that is seen among many of you is unnatural." Hence why she was sure they would not meet an untimely death.

"Not necessarily to solely humans as it applies to any animal which undergoes the natural deterioration of cells and biological aging process."

"I think it refers to as growing old, Professor.'' It was all he could remember right now. If the word even had anything to do with being old.
"Growing old. Yes. In simple terms, senescence does refer to that."

"It sounds like senile. And it rhymes with essence. That could be a potion name, ma'am, Senescence Essence." So creative, she was.

Who would have guessed Hufflepuffs had words that big in their vocabulary anyway, right? LOL.
"Funny how that works out... Senescence. Senile. And old people get senile. Irony with these terms." Or maybe not such a coincidence afterall.

Even with the coffin gone, Lux couldn't shake the bad feelings she was getting now. What if one of her friends died? What if Bay died? Nope. Nope. Nope. That was not going to happen if she had any say in the matter.

Feeling his hand pat her shoulder, she started to feel better. He wasn't going anywhere. Raising her hand at the question, Lux ventured an answer. "Does it have something to do with growing old and...dying?" Shudder.
"Growing old, yes. And eventually dying from biological aging."

It appeared that they were less at a place of learning for young wizards and more at a nursing home for the aged and infirm. He wanted to go home, but his mum wouldn't understand this.

Ian raised his hand to ask a question. Professor. Are you trying to get us to confront our untimely deaths? He just wanted it out there. I mean, you walk into a classroom and see a coffin and now we're talking about aging and some one had mentioned death. It would probably progress the conversation some.
Again with another student thinking they were going to die. "No, not necessarily. Because none of you lot are going to die despite your ... situations. However, I think not being afraid to speak about death or aging is a good thing"

Natural progression or something. Growing old until you couldn't live any more. There was a coffin here, yeah? And Ella still had that look of someone who was trying very hard not to get upset about the fact that death was way too close to her these days. She didn't even want to look around at her classmates for fear she might witness one of them keeling over or something. Nope. NOPE. She didn't like this discussion, could Hadley tell?

...The coffin did look comfy.
"Yes. Natural aging though. It doesn't refer to those who die of external hazards...." Which in a way was what was affecting them. External hazards. Unnatural aging.

SPEAKING OF... Zahra tried to give TOBY a HIGH FIVE on the way by? But since he was blind or whatever? HAHAH she smacked in the forehead. OOPS. HAHAHAHA

SO YEAH she was sitting with MIKEY and she nudged him and then she raised her hands after OTHER PEOPLE answered and totally stole their answers.

"YEAH like old people." BOOM baby. "Getting old, getting smacked in the head, falling down stairs. Hehe."
"Yes. like old people. And falling down stairs is something that might affect one with the biological aging process. Or just falling in general." General forgetfulness. And clumsiness.

"I thought it would be appropriate, yes, to discuss death because of the epidemic around Hogwarts, but not to accept your fate. Because it hopefully shouldn't be your fate for many decades to come." Hadley nodded at the Lioness. "However, I don't think its something to fear."

Feeling someone sitting down next to him, the eighteen year old turned his grey eyes to see... ... oh. Uh oh. This was going to be hard for her, wasn't it? Because... reasons. Alec shot the Head Girl what he hoped would be a reassuring smile. Hugs later?

Right. Attention back to Hadley and the disillusioned coffin.

Senescence... to grow old. An uncomfortable feeling started settling in as the boy cast an eye around at his classmates, who were already answering the question. Ageing. Yeah. "Professor?" he started, turning his attention back towards the front and raising his hand in the air, "Erm... there's cellular senescence where... your cells don't divide and grow and... there's senescence of the whole organism."
"In a sense though, they're kind of one and the same... Cellular where it just affects your cells would affect the whole organism." You know. Just saying and all. "It can also be applied to fruit, which is basically the ripening of the fruit"

"Physiological death is a process, rather than event. Hence why senescence is a popular term used to discuss it. Conditions which were once indicative of death are now reversible. Working heart and lungs, but brain dead such as those who received the dementor's kiss are in theory, considered dead." She paused a moment to remember the past groundskeeper who they recently lost. "So death, is when the biological functions that sustain a living organism cease to exist. What are some signs that might be present in a deceased organism? Some physical attributes that might exist?"
