Ian observed that the rune carving was going well. He was still rather skeptical about what a freed whomping willow would do, and so as he was chanting, he began to slowly step back away from the tree. Maybe if he scooted back far enough, he would be able to outrun the branches. At the very least, his closer classmates would get whacked first.
