She rolled her eyes and said " And yes, valerian root is used in the Draught of Living Death and the Draught of Peace. Sprigs of valerian are used in the Forgetfulness Potion. Valerian root is also used to make Treacle fudge. But we aren't speaking about that."
Right they needed to get back to the potion. She retrieved a black colored berry and showed it to the class. " This is highly highly toxic. It is called deadly nightshade, or Belladonna. Now watch carefully as I'm doing this only once." She took the gold needle out of her potions kit, cleaned it and pierced the berry, leaving a drop of it's juice on the gold needle part. She then set the berry on fire, burning off any juice that had trickled on her skin. She held the gold pin over her cauldron and waited until the drop fell into it. She burned off the excess from the pin, re-cleaned it and put it back into her kit.
" Only 18 carat gold is used. And the drop of juice should not have touched anything but the gold. This is important. And you do not want to have any of the juice or berry on or around you. Use the burner to burn the berry and juice, as that fire is magical and won't burn anything else." She said. " Go on now... Get your berry." The explanations of the uses of valerian, along with the note that the potion really would kill a person if they didn't have a working wand, only made Kendall that much more unsure about actually continuing. However, she also was afraid of getting kicked out like Laura had, so he ronly choice would be to continue. Even if she didn't exactly trust that the potion in fact only would help people forget bad dreams or whatever. She just hoped they weren't testing it on anything later, or themselves specifically. Especially at all the reminders about how deadly belladonna could be, which she remembered from the herbology lesson. It all just made her want everyone to be that much more careful, because she'd rather not die. That wasn't a superhero thing to do, unless it was sacrificing oneself to save the world. She was only fourteen, though, and only a superhero's sidekick. It wasn't her job to save the world, just to help.
But back to the potion, because she imagined it probably shouldn't be allowed to boil too long between ingriedents, either. She took the time to write a step-by-step litle section of he rnotes for reference first, just to stall a tiny bit longer. Plus, that way she knew she knew everything. Then, she finally fished her gold needle out of her kit, using her wand to clean it carefully before retrieving her berry. Gently, she stuck the needle in the berry and moved it all over her cauldron as she withdrew it to see a drop-ish on the needle. Tossing the berry itself into the flame, she watched it flare up momentarily before looking back to the drop falling neatly into the mixture inside the cauldron. No stirring had been mentioned again, so that meant cleanup. To which end she stuck the needle into the flame to burn the remaining juice away, along with one of her fingers that had gotten a bit of juice on it as well. This is kinda cool, she thought, as the juice burned away but her finger stayed perfectly fine. And then she pulled her hand back to grasp her wand again, cleaning the needle before slipping it back in her kit to wait for the next instruction.
Even if she kind of wanted to play with the flame again.
