That part had her a bit puzzled. Maybe she could ask him..but then wouldn't she seem a just a little greedy. After all she was still fairly new. How would it look if she was already trying to discuss her pay? Maybe it wouldn't have even mattered. As long as she did a job well done she could still get those extra Galleons right...?
"So Mr. Recard," She could just smuggle in some small talk for now. All things would eventually get explained sooner or later. "After seeing such a large welcome back party I admit I'm a bit curious as to why you might have left in the first place." She said with half a smile; the key was to remain pleasant--not overbearing. With people as warm as these she couldn't see why he would have chosen to leave for however long he did.
'Why don't you just read the back issues of the Daily Prophet!' Was what he
wanted to say but that would be rude when first meeting your new employee.
"Well, I decided, along with the Minister, that I needed a break due to...personal reasons, but once my predessor disappeared it was obvious no one else could run the place quite like me." Recard concluded that with a smile and a nod. See, he was the best candidate for the job, the Minister thought so too.
At least this one had brains.

Holding out her hand, she introduced herself.
"Hi, I'm Mackenzie Gilbert. I'm new here, just transferred to London from a previous engagement. Is there anything I should know about the job or just the place in general?" she asked, eager to get started on whatever she had to do. She didn't know many people here, so what better way to meet people than to start a brand new job.
Oooh an eager employee ready to start work.
"Hello there Mackenzie, I'm happy to have you on our level. I trust you've found things pleasing thus far?" What better first day could she have had? A party and all that was definately a good thing if he said so.
Now what to say for her loaded question?
"Well basically just get to know everyone. Your job will have its ups and downs but the people on this level are very helpful and you will find that they are always ready to help if you need them, including me." Recard nodded and took a sip of his champagne.

She lowered her voice a bit and continued "And I don't really look like this, my grandfather was half goblin. I enchanted myself to look more human, but only for today."
Half goblin? Okay...
Armen kept his face composed, regardless of the interesting relevation Gerti had just layed on him, and smiled before taking another sip of his drink.
"Well I guess you have heard correctly. It's good to have you in Transportation Gerti."

The party was starting to move into a lull and he didn't want his Welcome Back party to end on a low note so he would say a few more words and then dismiss them all. Yes, go out with a bang.
"Alright everyone once again I would like to thank you all for the warm welcomes and I'm happy to see so many new faces. Level Six will return to its former glory before my unfortunate leave of absence soon I assure you and with that you all may go home early!" He said raising his glass once more.
"See you all tomorrow bright and early."
