The younger Plimpies are able to untangle themselves, while the older, they float away and die. Our house elves have placed traps for the older ones to fall into... sometimes they are dead and sometimes still alive. When they catch a live one, they'll untangle it and throw it back in the water. The dead ones are..." brought to her... "disposed of."

"The first step in harvesting ingredients from a dead plimpy is to untangle it's legs. Be very gentle, and you can damage them." She began showing the students how to take the knot out of the plimpy's legs by demonstrating on her own, very large plimpy. "There. No bruising. The legs are intact. You may try." She said and began walking around the class but stopped. "If you haven't understood what we are going to be doing, I'll be more clear. We're opening up this creature and taking it's parts to use as ingredients in potions. If you are squeamish, you are free to leave. If you wish to stay, and not participate but watch... you may chose to do so as well... though you will not receive full points on this lesson." She waited a moment, again rubbing her temples and then added. "But you'll need to chose now..."

Stella had been staring at the plimpy on her station in sympathy ever since she'd sat down, half-wondering if it knew what it was in for. She'd noticed when Blue had joined her, at least peripherally, but she'd only given the girl a brief smile before returning to bound creature contemplation. Namely, if it in fact was a plimpy and then if it was dead. Both ideas apparently got verified, as she snapped back into focus to realize she'd missed a question having been asked. Well, at least I know you were a plimpy, and from the black lake. Oh, and that you were dead before you got trapped, she thought, silently communicating with the bound and deceased water creature. At leaest she knew something about it before giving it an unceremonious autopsy and involuntary organ donation.

She was honestly surprised that Professor Lafay was giving them the option to back out of the lesson, however, and she looked over at Blue again as if she was silently asking the firstie if she was going to be alright or if she wanted to take the professor up on the offer. The girl had seemed a bit squeamish about it not that long before, as she'd noticed even if she'd tuned out half of the rest of the discussion. She was back now, and no matter how much she wished she wasn't going to be doing it, she wasn't leaving the lesson. She just wanted to make sure her DADA partner wasn't going to faint, as well as wondering if both of them would have to work on the plimpy. Either way, she slid her Potions journal out quietly to take notes on what they were doing. It wasn't exactly brewing, but she had a feeling it was just as important.

Plimpy harvesting

Step 1: Untangle the plimpy's legs. (They commonly get tied together by merpeople to keep them from being able to damage their property.)

Once she'd written that down, adding a bit of random plimpy facts she remembered from some CoMC reading she'd done a while ago, she reached over to gently pick up the plimpy's legs. Delicately untangling them as had been demonstrated by the professor, she gently laid them back onto the table. Just because they were going to be harvesting it for its parts didn't mean she had to disrespect the dead. She just also knew better than to disresepct Professor Lafay, too, and the woman already looked to have a bit of a headache. That only meant they'd all have to be that much more careful.
