Upon checking her notes, she saw that she was right in thinking that she needed to position her sundial so that it was pointing North. She quickly went and did that as carefully and precisely as she could. She made sure that it was also resting flat.
Then she needed to make sure that the gnomon (the thing that cast the shadow) was at the right latitude. She quickly did the calculations for that in her head before adjusting it.
Now she waited and watched to see where the shadow the gnomon cast would fall on the sundial. Still watching, she saw that it landed on 7:00. Looking at her watch, she saw that it was 7:10 am. She was only ten minutes off, and that fact made her really happy.
Now she was done her homework, and she quickly did a sketch of the sundial like she had done of the nocturnal in her dorm the other night after star gazing. She also recorded the time that she had got from the sundial as well as the correct time and wrote that right under the timings she had got from the nocturnal.
Now it was time for her to leave the observatory. She needed to get her nocturnal so that she could return both instruments to the Professor. |
